Karen & A.B. with the infamous Hilfing Grabit!
Just to give a little overview of what the Blitz Doubles
is: We play quick 20-shoe games with two possible
down and back tie-breakers, if needed. Round robin
format. We draw for teams splitting and matching the
High & Low percentages. For each game you choose
what horseshoes your opponents will pitch! Only NHPA
sanctioned and approved horseshoes are allowed. No
“picnic” shoes! You can choose from any shoes you
bring or own. No shoe swapping or trading. This year
Karen Meredith & A.B. Webb drawed up teams and this
proved to be an unbeatable pair. A.B. has a large
collection of horseshoes from which to choose and
Karen is a “Blitz” expert, having won this event 3 out of
the 5 times we have held it! A.B. employed the strategy
of having every team he played, pitch the Hilfing Grabit
horseshoe. It done a pretty good job of throwing off the
competition as the most any team pitched with the
Grabit was 3 ringers out of 20 shoes. Robert Taylor &
Ronnie Adwell were looking good early on with two
opening wins but would falter after that. Ronnie & I got
the Ted Allen & Mustang in the first 2 games and done
well but we had the Viper, M&M Flip, Snyder & Grabit
shoes after that. The M&M Flip turns verrrry slow, the
John tries to turn the GXL shoe vs Mike Clark.
Snyder does not turn flat and the other two…just
throw’em up there and hope they go on! A.B & Karen
didn’t have too much trouble with wins, defeating
Salleng & Brooks 18-3, Neagle & Lindsey 20-4, Hudnall
& J. Adwell 12-5, B. Webb & Clark 22-10. Ronnie
Adwell & Robert Taylor had them down in Game 5 after
12 shoes 5-2. I had remembered from last year that Blitz
“Supergirl”, Karen Meredith’s kryptonite was the Six
Pac shoe! In every game prior to this one, Karen was
near pitching her average which is remarkable in this
format! The Six Pac shoe held Karen ringerless in this
game but A.B. came in and picked up the slack. After
tying the game at 5 all in 16 shoes, A.B. put on a double
and reeled in a reverse fist pump while doing a little hop
across the court! A.B. scored a 3 ringer 3 and Karen
added another point in the last inning to defeat Taylor &
R. Adwell 9-5. Karen & A.B. would go on to Game 6
and polish off Charlie & Joie Meredith 21-3 to make it a
clean sweep in the Blitz Doubles. Bob Hudnall & Jimmy
Adwell would be the best of the rest with two losses,
done in by the Hilfing Grabit & the Viper shoe against
Ben & Mike. Here are the overall final standings among
the seven teams that participated.

One interesting stat that I have included below is the
total ringer percentage pitched with each shoe brand.
You can see that the Grabit gave everyone a tough time
and gave the Webb/Meredith team an advantage!
Hey Charlie, how did you like those Grabit horseshoes?
Deronda, were
you wondering
“What did I
get myself
into?”
Going into the final night of league play, we had three
players with a shot to win the Summer League: Charlie
Meredith had 23 wins, Jimmy Adwell had 21.5 wins and
John Neagle had 20 wins. John had led much of the
league and was neck and neck with Charlie down the
stretch with Jimmy close by. John had and 0-3 week 11
which really hurt his chances in the final night of play.
In the final night, John would rebound with a 3-0 night
to pass Jimmy, 0-3, for second place. Charlie would go
2-1 to claim his first League Championship! Charlie
took the high game of the league at 92%, which he
didn’t get until Week #11. Jimmy would post his highest
overall league average to date at 28.67%. Jimmy just
keeps improving! Deronda Lindsey surpassed the 30%
barrier with a 34% game to earn her next level patch.
Overall, Charlie finished with a league record of 25-8,
averaging 71.21%, John was 23-10 with a 50.48%
average and Jimmy wound up at 21.5- 14.5. A big
thanks to Jimmy Adwell for taking care of the
Chalybeate courts all season long! They have been in
great shape all year!

ECHPA. Remember, each membership helps keep our
sport and club going. Support the Club! Unify! Next
season, I would like to see our club put more effort into
getting groups together and invading these tourneys as a
unified club by supporting each other in each class that
we have a member competing. Root your fellow club
members on! Pump them up! We can do it!
I thought it would be fun to list here the shoe styles and
shoes that the Chalybeate Club was throwing in the year
2018. (Yeah, I know Eddie switches all the time.)
