Troubleshoot Volvo V70 XC AWD 99 Transmission No reverse
I summarize a real car repair case of 99 Volvo V70 xc AWD Transmission No reverse, hope it will
help those who have the same car and same problem.
Car model and year:
99 Volvo V70 xc AWD, it’s a second hand car.
Miles:
With 240,000 miles
Symptom:
Reverse was slipping a little when i bought the car. Drove for about 2 months, and had reverse
when i got home from 1hr.. Trip down to Richmond VA, next morning.. Started the car wouldn't
back up at all.. You can hear the engine rev.. But the trans doesn't engage at all.. Drives great
forward.. No slipping no shuttering no nothing.. All the power it has always had. I have drain and
filled fluid 6 times or so.. And the reverse slipping seemed to be much improved before it quit all
together...
Two questions I have:
1) Is there any chance it could be anything else other than worn trans.. this was a one owner car
with 240,000 miles. fluid looked a little dark when i bought it.. but not burnt all to hell and not
really stinky.. maintenance records all up to date and done over the years.. he gave me receipts
for everything.
2) if it is toast, I have a 95 850 turbo wagon, with a newer trans i put in before totaling the car
(small front end collision) does anyone know if i can pull that trans out and put it into my 99 v70
xc I know many of the parts are compatible..
Troubleshooting:
There are several problems with swapping in the '95 transmission into the XC.
The AWD transmission is different than the FWD transmission. If you wanted to remove the
transfer case (and lose the AWD) you could get a FWD to work, but really not a '95 transmission.
The speed and RPM sensors on the '95 version are different than the '96 to '98 versions and the
sensors on the '99, while being in the same place as the '96-'98, are digital while the earlier ones
are analog. If it were a '96-'98 transmission you can swap the digital sensors for the analog but
there really isn't any to realistically go from the '95 to the later versions.
Ask the car owner whether he read the codes:
Is the up arrow flashing and have you read the codes?
There is a chance, albeit slim, that there is a control problem and codes will help sort it out.
The car owner answer:
The arrow is not flashing and hasn't come on.. i know it still works when I push the winter button..
and it worked well in the snow here...
i dont know where to pull the tranny codes from. I have an OBDII scanner, will that work.
Finally, VIDA DICE advised to use
Some of the error codes will show up with a typical OBD-II scanner but it may take VIDA DICE to
get deeper into the diagnostics.
I recommend diyobd2.fr, I have one VIDA DICE € 86 from
http://www.diyobd2.fr/wholesale/volvo-vida-dice-diagnostic-tool.html
The reason I recommend diyobd2 is that not only VIDA DICE is available with French language,
but the customer service Lilas can speak French, and manage this site for almost 4 years so
know what she sell.
