Problem-solving gymnastic

Gymnastics and grids teach horses to problem-solve, to use their front ends effectively, and to jump off their hocks:• They identify weaknesses in both horse and rider, and are an ideal too for teaching

and strengthening.• Key for the rider through the gymnastic: approach at a balanced trot, support with the leg,

stay tall and out of the horse’s way.

To do this exercise effectively:• Start small – for green horses poles build up slowly from poles on the ground.• Incorporate flat work at the end (downward transitions, circles, halts. • Come off the grid and alternate turning to the left and to the right. • If your horse races through the grid, focus on a halt between the small oxer and the

second cross rail
