Gaz’s rOCkin’ bLUes - The FirsT 30 Years GAz MAYAll
• Gaz’s Rockin’ blues is an institution and london’s longest
running one-nighter club. It was founded by Gaz Mayall on the
3rd of July 1980 and was held at Gossip’s on Dean Street, Soho
until November 1995 when it moved to its current venue St
Moritz in Wardour Street.
• Never missing a Thursday night in 30 years, Gaz DJ’s and
hosts, and occasionally plays live with his ska band The Trojans.
• Gaz was raised on a musical diet of R&b and was dragged
around every beat, pop & rock festival and venues throughout the
sixties as a child, becoming a lifelong fan of reggae as a kid on
the football terraces in the skinhead era circa 1968-72. He is also
a great fan of boogie woogie, rock’n’roll, traditional Irish music,
funk and world music.
• This book is released to coincide with the 30th anniversary
of the club night in July 2010, and features all the flyers and
posters made especially for the night over the years, as well
as some photos, anecdotes and everything you wanted to know
about this legendary and well-loved night.
The eldest son of blues legend John Mayall, Gaz began
collecting records aged 17, bulk buying cheap reggae and ska
collections down street markets such as Portbello road and
brick lane at a time when it seemed no one wanted them.
In late 1986 he formed his band The Trojans, and for the last
nineteen years has been running his own record label Gaz’s
Rockin’ Records, producing ska acts and artistes around the
world.

The Caribbean Alex Webb
• Alex Webb is a Magnum photographer best known for his
vibrant colour work, who since 1975 has been fascinated with
the colours and landscapes of the Caribbean.• Mare Magazine, a German magazine dedicated to photographic stories surrounding the oceans, recently commissioned Webb for their annual book publication.
• entitled ‘The Caribbean’, this book is a collection of some of
Webb’s best images from all over this exotic, tropical and often
tumultous region.
• Webb’s work is a combination of street style, photojournalism
and fine art photography, with this particular emphasis on
colour and light. In particular Webb is fascinated with the island
of Cuba and its capital Havana, which he sees as one of the most
majestic and colour-rich cities in the Caribbean.
• The photographs in this book are infused with warmth and
saturated colours, at the same time bringing us a sense of the
rich drama of the region, from the seafront of Havana to the
streets of Haiti.
Alex Webb is the recipient of several awards including the leica
Medal of excellence (2000), and the Hasselblad Foundation
award (1998). His work has appeared in many magazines such
as GeO, Time, and the New York Times, & in particular the
National Geographic.

• On 13th February 1960, France conducted its first nuclear
test deep in the Algerian desert, under the governance of
Charles de Gaulle. Since then France, keen to maintain a grasp
on its weapons of mass destruction, has carried out over 200
nuclear tests, the majority of these on the other side of the
world, in French Polynesia.
• The first took place above the Moruroa atoll on July 2nd 1966,
the last as recently as 1996. These tests have had a devastating
effect on the ecology and health of those living and working in
the atolls.
• Julie Pomery, a young French photographer, has spent the
last four years researching the extent of the damage through
photographs, secret documents and letters, old and new, as
well as interviews with those directly affected; from army
veterans sent to work there, to local people who had no choice
but to live there.
• This February marks the 50th anniversary of the first of
these nuclear tests, which have gone on to have far-reaching
consequences for both the natural world, our health and
human rights.

• blanco is a photographic project whose purpose is to report
on the blind condition worldwide of Onchocerciasis, also known
as river blindness, and to inform about the battle with this
disease,
and when it is possible to prevent and cure it.
• Onchocerciasis is the world’s second-leading infectious
cause of blindness. It is caused by parasitic worms transmitted
through the bite of the black fly which live in fast-flowing
rivers, and along fertile banks where farming communities are
often located.
• The WHO (World Health Organization) have a project called
“World Vision 2020”, which aims to put an end to the condition of
permanent blindness by 2020.
• The journey ‘blanco’ (since blindness is seen as a constant
vision of white), starts in 2003 and ends in 2007, reporting on
the blind conditions in four continents and the countries liberia,
Nigeria, Uganda, Rwanda, Congo, Peru, brazil, bolivia, Thailand,
China, laos, Vietnam, bulgaria, lithuania.
Stefano de luigi is an Italian photographer, whose work has
been published and exhibited around the world. ‘blanco’ received
support from the W. eugene Smith Fellowship Grant in 2007.

• Open Shutters Iraq is a book of nine photographic essays
and writing by women from all over Iraq. The thread of
contemporary Iraqi history emerges through their tales of war,
sanctions, intifada, siege, kidnapping, grief, love, happiness,
times of resistance, achievements and small triumphs.
• The women came from many different backgrounds and had
no previous photographic experience. They were trained in
photography and writing by the editor of the book, photographer
eugenie Dolberg.
• As Irada zaydan, the Iraqi Project Manager who quit her job
as a professor at the University of baghdad to work on this
project, and risked her life on several occasions says, “This
is not a project, this is a dream. A dream I want to live for my
daughter. So she can grow up and understand what is truly
happening now.”
• On Saturday 27th December 2008, the Israeli army launched
a sudden attack on Gaza. Its objectives: to bring Hamas to
submission for eight years of rocket launches into Israel.
• During the month-long seige the international media was
denied access to cover the true extent of the escalating attack,
and so it was left to Palestinian photographers within the
territory, with Jan Grarup, a respected Danish photojournalist.
• even these images found little exposure to the outside world,
and the bbC for the first time controversially blocked an appeal
by the Disasters emergency Committee for aid to Gaza.
• This book released on the one year anniversary of the attack,
brings together photographs that document the true extent and
horror of the attack, much of which was not reported at the time.
• Noam Chomsky, the respected political commentator,
has agreed for his account of the history of the conflict to be
published as an introduction to the images.
