Chapter 7

Rigid Motion in a Plane

A figure can be reflected, rotated or translated to produce a new figure. The use of transformations can be seen everywhere including in nature, art, architecture and advertising.

Start looking for logos that illustrate this. You will have to bring one in very soon!

What is a transformation?

A transformation is an operation that maps an initial figure (pre-image) onto a final image called an image.

Types of Transformations (Isometries)

Reflection Rotation Translation Composition of transformations (a

combination of a reflection, rotation or a translation)

Isometry

An isometry exists when the image is congruent to the preimage.

An isometry preserves:– Shape & Size– Angle measure– Betweenness of points – Collinearity– Parallel Lines

Preimage and Image notes

As already stated the preimage is the original figure.

An image is your final image.

Preimage and Image notes

When notation is required, a preimage is labeled as ΔXYZ. The image uses ΔX’Y’Z’. This is read as “triangle X prime, Y prime and Z prime”.
