Difficulties adapting to college teaching styles and learning environments

Poor development of non-academic habits and skills resulted in poor preparation for self-directed learning

Early messaging, planning and exposure to college environments and expectations to foster a smoother transition

Establish structures and policies that set high expectations for high school students to assume responsibility for their own learning.

Lack of basic skills and of fluency in areas such as time management, writing ability, effective reading strategies, note-taking skills and test-taking strategies.

• As of 2008, 60% of full-time freshman at public two year colleges return for the sophomore year. (up 1.0 ppts from 2007-2008 data)

This means…..

• 40% are NOT returning (included in this number are those students that successfully transfer but it does count against the original institution’s retention rate.)

• As of 2008, 78.2%of full-time freshmen at public four-year colleges return for the sophomore year. (no significant change from 2007-2008)

This means…

• 21.8 % are NOT returning (included in this number are those students that successfully transfer but it does count against the original institution’s retention rate.)
