Making Your Prius Go Further
Simple Tips for Boosting Your Gas Mileage
Congratulations!
You are part of the over 1 million people that have
enacted global betterment in a Prius
Why Drive for Higher Mileage?
Lowers wear on your gas engine. Helps your brake lifetime.
Saves you up to 20% on gas bills
Increased safety with slower speeds, more focus
Up to 20% lower carbon emissions
Basic Realities
No vehicle can defy physics
Snow, rain, and wind increase friction. (No 60mpg in a snowstorm!)
Anything effecting the co-efficient of drag will hurt mileage.
There is a break-in period.
We will cover:
Pulse and Glide
Appropriate Braking
Air/Heat management
Driving Modes
First Step:
MAXIMUM
tire pressure.
Hybrid System Indicator
Pulse and Glide
When can you glide?
Getting off the Interstate
At a moderate road decline
When no other cars are around
Coming up to a traffic light
EV Driving
An option under 41 mph
Below the center line
Instant mileage will indicate 100mpg anytime you are in full EV driving
Over 41 mph
Accelerate to target speed
Pull foot off gently to allow the indicator near the center line
Re-depress pedal just enough to keep speed constant
Highway Driving
70 mph = 50 mpg
65 mph = 54 mpg
On Cruise Control
learn to use momentum and gravity. let the car slow a bit as you crest the tip of a rise, then let gravity speed you up on the downhill instead of the engine.
Regenerative Braking
Actual friction brakes do not engage until charge on left is fully lit
Apply brakes early
Glide if possible
Heat and Air Conditioning
Use a pulse and glide technique!
Set temperature to high and fan to high, allowing the cabin to warm up.
Turn climate control off, with the recycled air light illuminated.
Driving Modes
In Power Mode the accelerator response is amplified by up to 25%.
Switch to EV Mode for near-silent, emission-free driving.
Switch to Eco Mode for the best fuel economy across all driving conditions
Additional Tips
Low resistance tires
Drive later in the day if possible
Rid your Prius of heavy objects
Other Green Tips
Valvoline half recycled oil (same guarantees as the regular oil)
Plant based oil G-oil (synthetic)
