My Reason Campaign 2016Why Return to School?
At National American University (NAU), we understand that our students have obligations and demanding schedules outside of school… but that shouldn't mean they can't pursue an education. At NAU, we provide you with the support you need to reach your educational and career goals through relevant degree programs, flexible study options, and personal advising.
It's never too late.In 2009, students aged 25
and older accounted for roughly 40 percent of all
college and graduate students, according to the
National Center for Education Statistics.
That figure is expected to rise to 43 percent by 2020
as 9.6 million older students head to campus.
Top Reasons to Go Back to School
Switching careers
Becoming more marketable
Receiving a promotion
Learning a new skill
Improving job stability
Earning a higher salary
Grandmother and mother of five children, Missy, worked two jobs outside the home to
help support her family. But after her kids were grown and she had spent more than 20 years in the medical field, Missy decided she wanted to
do something for herself, her kids and her now-three grandchildren.
“I want to leave a legacy for all my grandkids,” she said. Missy graduated with her bachelor’s degree and is now working on her master’s degree. “Don’t
let anyone or anything stop you from getting your education,” she advises others. “Go for your dream
and have fun doing it.”

For IT student, Darren, it was the recent dip in the economy that made him realize a degree might just aid in his family’s financial future.
“My children’s future was my biggest factor,” Darren said of his reason for going back to school to complete a degree in Information Technology. Darren was aware of several individuals in his field that had lost their jobs due to company downsizings—a reality that many working adults faced over the last few years. How can education play a role in this? The BLS’s Employment Projections shows that not only are college graduates earning more than those adults with less education, but are seeing unemployment rates at much lower rates. “I knew I had to finish school to be competitive in the IT industry.” Darren has not only managed to stay competitive, but found a new job in the process. “I had no problem getting hired at my current company because of my education and experience.”

Joyce Engen's reason for going back to school was simply the fact that she needed a change. After spending 21 years as a transcriptionist, Joyce was burned out. She was working from
home and felt socially isolated – so Joyce decided to make a change.
"NAU offered the flexibility in the schedule that allowed me to work part-time jobs around my school
schedule." Despite challenges that came along the way, Joyce was able to complete her
Associate of Applied Science in Medical Assisting degree
in 2013 – making a huge change for herself and her happiness. "I feel excited now about getting up and going to work. The interactions I have with staff and
patients make my day – every day."
