Working with 30-50 economists including Nobel Laureates, 100+ sector experts, government, donor organizations, civil society, development agencies, businesses, youth, across rural and urban areas to identify, analyze and prioritize interventions that will deliver greater benefit per gourde spent, helping move Haiti towards a more prosperous long term future.
Copenhagen Consensus Center organized roundtable discussions
with an aim to figure out smarter solutions to the most problematic
issues facing Haiti.
These roundtables are one of several sources
for research ideas.
Research Ideas
Interventions;(1 of 5)
• Create of 3 integrated economic zones to stimulate economic growth and development in Plateau Central (agribusiness), including a sea port in St. Marc; Northern Corridor (tourism and agribusiness, including livestock and fisheries); and Acquin-Cayes (tourism and agribusiness).
• Reform electricity. • Adopt a pro-export monetary policy.• Reform the electoral and political system.• Enforce land and property rights.• Invest in urban planning, roads and electricity.
Interventions; (2 of 5)
• Invest in textiles (readymade garments), livestock and agriculture.
• Subsidize households in extreme poverty by :• Protecting them against inflation;• Subsidizing health, education (including university and
technical school), food security, water and sanitation and electricity.
• Give credit to women.• Increase women's wages.• Invest in a program such as PSUGO to provide universal
access to primary education.
Interventions; (3 of 5)
• Include a course "career orientation/counseling" in the curriculum for the final 4 years of secondary school.
• Stimulate entrepreneurship through the creation of a development bank for startups.
• Create a startup competition. • Encourage the establishment of mutual solidarity and
mutual service to “formalize” the informal sector. • Mass campaign (television show and radio broadcast
transmitted by) targeting young people on the opportunities in agriculture and agri-business.
• Introduce courses on "management" starting in kindergarten.

• Formalizing the informal by creating registries of church members across the country.
• Include a course on civic education and put emphasis on group projects.
• Create a mutual for schools, where each school contributes 5 gourde per student per month.
• Grant credit to solidarity mutuals/funds.• Strengthen land rights.• Reduce the cost of rent.• Establish a policy on bilingual education.

• Establish a support program for women living in extreme poverty such as "Ti Manman Cheri."
