Head Lice Yes they’re back! In my 27 years in education, I have yet to work in a school where head lice do not appear from time to time. And yes, it can often be a frustrating problem for parents and the school. It’s important to be aware of some of the facts relating to head lice. I have included a fact sheet provided by the Department of Health, Victoria in this newsletter. Here are some of the main points:
Head lice have been around for thousands of years and anyone can get them.
People get head lice from direct hair to hair contact with another person.
Head lice can become resistant to insecticides.
Head lice require two treatments—seven days apart.
Children may return to school on the day after treatment.
Schools must follow guidelines as determined by the Department of Education and the Department of Health. Where a child is suspected of having head lice, he/she must be excluded from school until the day after treatment. This is done in a manner that minimises embarrassment to the student, but also deals with the situation in an effective way. Parents are advised that their child may have head lice and are asked to collect their child from school. Parents of other students in the class are advised that an incidence of head lice has
been detected in their child’s class. All parents are provided with literature that provides advice on treatment and prevention.
A facts sheet provided by the Health
Department is included in this newsletter.
