Too Many Hats!Managing Multiple Libraries
Without Losing All of Your Sanity!
Limitations
• You are 1 person• You CAN’T do everything at each campus as a
Multi-Campus Librarian• You CAN do a few things at each campus well
and make the most of your situation• You are not alone
Goal Setting/Achievement• Try to keep your goals manageable– Remember there is only one of you and you have
multiple full-time jobs so you can’t do it all• Try to create goals you can work on in steps– Float to Campus A and work, then to Campus B
• Try to work with your aides (if you have them)– My aides are the only reason I can achieve most goals
Tips and Tricks for Multiple Libraries• Go Paperless (as much as possible)– Use digital budget files– Force vendors to email you– Force teachers to email you (if necessary)– Keep digital copies of things you like
• Google Docs• Use to manage lists you need shared access to
– Google Calendar• Use to set up library schedules for teachers to book
times
Tips and Tricks for Multiple Libraries• Decide if you will float or have a set schedule– One office or many– How flexible is your district?
• Learn to use Sticky Notes
• Learn to use Snipping tool
• Join a Library ListServ if you haven’t– http://lmnet.wordpress.com/subscribe/
Tips and Tricks for Multiple Libraries• Amazon Wish Lists– Easy way to track books on the fly• 1 list per campus
– Have aides create and share lists with you• Student book recommendations• Teacher requests• Next book in a series
• Use your library software program to better track popular titles/student interests
Purchasing/Cataloging Tips• BookList free PD webinars– http://www.booklistonline.com/webinars
• Delegate to Aides– Tracking teacher requests– Tracking student requests– Tracking new books in series– Processing new books (when possible)
Purchasing/Cataloging Tips• Limit the number of vendors you use• Aim for a few big orders instead of many small ones– But don’t try to order for all campuses at once!
• If you can get free Marc Records, use them!• Figure out a system for barcode tracking and use it• Set up a system at each location for titles you need
to work on when you visit.
Web Design for the Busy• Copy some easy html to use as a template in
notepad (word doesn’t like html)– How to Embed a link– How to change font size, color– Scrolling Marquees
• Use Shelfari to add color to your page• Set update reminders on your calendar so you
don’t forget to check your page periodically.
Easy HTMLUsing Shelfari Destiny Instructions
Book Talks/Advertising• Read when you can, try to get your aide to read• Encourage student reviews in your card catalog• Use QR Codes/Digital Content uploads to
provide access when you aren’t available
Free QR Code Generator
Research• Keep things simple (single password access)• Train teachers/aides so they can assist students
in your absence• Work with Technology teachers especially• Try to convince teachers to plan ahead and let
you know they are coming so you can plan too.
Research Instructions
Adding Technology/E-books• E-books – Overdrive (Public Library)– Follett Shelf (School Library)– Storia (Elementary Library)
