The creation of spaces where people can prosper is one of the most demanding, yet rewarding challenges. Taking part in the design of new architectural spaces has always tempted me, the confluence of technical and artistic issues being particularly appealing. Yet it was not until completing my Bachelor and throughout my year-out that I gained a full understanding of how architecture engages with all aspects of human life. I see architecture as a comprehensive problem solving exercise where the right balance between artistic, structural and functional qualities has to be found.
I am strongly drawn to the MArch course at the Edinburgh College of Art because of its innovative educational methodology offering a choice of thought provoking themes and a large range of research opportunities, hence enabling individuals to pursue self-driven architectural interests. The strong studio culture at ESALA allowing interactions with students of various academic fields, such as landscape architecture, urban design and architectural conservation is a further important asset the cutting edge architectural education.
Throughout my MArch I wish to pursue my research into city regeneration. During my first year-out placement, I was part of a winning competition team in charge of a 17ha regeneration masterplan, a highly instructive challenge. I learned to understand the value of land ownership and building phases, allowing different parts of a city to be built independently, as well as the importance of existing axes and structures.
The differences in society and culture that shape the buildings and the layout of a city are a further architectural field

were awarded the first prize and were hence in charge of following the project through all work stages to completion. This had been a unique educative experience where I learned the importance of good communication within a project team.
After completion of my master’s degree I aspire to become a fully qualified architect specialising in regeneration and reconstruction projects in cities either hit by disasters or that have become derelict over time. I feel that your course would be the perfect opportunity to pursue this career in a well-structured academic environment.
that I am particularly keen to continue discovering. Speaking five languages fluently and having visited and lived in various societies, I have gained a deep understanding of different cultures. Having written my bachelor degree dissertation on ‘Providing Shelter after Natural Disasters’, I was able to secure a 6-month internship at the Shelter Research Unit of the Red-Cross where I am in charge of carrying out a housing development project, 4 months of which I will spend in Senegal. This internship is a great learning opportunity where I am becoming familiar with adobe construction, as well as gaining a deep insight into Senegalese culture and architectural background.
Being a determined person, I enjoy planning and making projects come to reality. This does not solely refer to architecture, but also to various aspects of my free time. Whilst in the 2nd and 3rd year of my Bachelor, I was part of the Kent Article 25 Student Chapter, first as treasurer, then as vice-president raising over £4000 in two years. Moreover, during my final BA year, I participated with another architecture student in a competition to design a bus shelter in Luxembourg. We

This module consisted of designing landscape interventions which improve the permeability of a north entrance to the heart of Canterbury and integrate the design of a small museum/cafe building within the site. Key aspects to this design were: accessibility, historical context, renewable energy and sustainability.

MERSCH, MARISCA VILLE D’EAU

Whilst respecting a detailed master-plan in a Luxembourgish town, the office was appointed to develop 5 plots, each of slightly varying dimensions. The three-story townhouses were to be energy-efficient and individually sold. I was in charge of developing 3 plots with a total of 13 three-story houses from concept stage throughout to planning approval. Following client, consultant and authority meetings, the designs developed and adapted to the clients needs as well the constraints of budget and legislations.

Plan with Dimensions | Vectorworks, Photoshop Perspective of Bus Shelter for Competition| SketchUp, Artlantis, Photoshop
Front Elevation with Dimensions | Vectorworks, Photoshop
In a group of two architecture students we participated in a competition organised by the OAI (Ordre des Architectes et Ingénieures) and the SNJ (Service Nationale de la Jeunesse). The brief was to design a bus shelter for the nature reserve Ellergronn in Luxembourg, an area which is characterised by remains of the ore mining industry of the 19th and 20th century. The design is inspired by mine cart tracks that give the impression to rise from the ground and form the shelter.
