^ GENEALOGY OF
^ DAVID BROWDER, OF VlicGINIA
AND HIS DESCENDANTS.
$.s far back as the line of descent recorded below can be traced,
Richard Browder and Henry Cousins stand as the joint heads and remote
ancestors.
As no records are available as to the date of birth, marriage
and death of either, nothing is certainly known in either of these
lines of facts in the history of the two families. Both lived and
died in Virginia, but the nativity of Richard Browder, while not
certainly known, is supposed to have been Virginia, and Henry Cousins
is said to have been a native of England. Richard Browder, according
to traditional report, married a Miss Thompson, and as a result of
this marriage, a relationship is said to exist between the descen-
dants of Richard Browder and the Thompson family of central Kentucky,
The issues of this marriage, so far as kno\^m, were David,
Littleberry, William and Mary Browder. There may have been other
children, but if so the fact is not known.
Henry Cousins married a Miss Thompson also whose Christian name
is not known. Eight children were the issues of this marriage, viz.:
Mary, Rebecca, Eliza, Ann, Jane and Henry, and the names of two daughters
are unknovm. Mary married David Browder and their descendants now
reside in Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama, Louisiana, Missouri and Illinois.
Rebecca married Judson Worsham and their descendants now reside
chiefly in Virginia.
Eliza married Thomas Chambers, and their descendants now reside
chiefly in Alabama and Virginia,c
4
Ann married Richard Ferguson, and their descendants now reside
chiefly in Virginia,
Of the two daughters whose full names are not known, one married
Hazlewood and the other married Pritchett—the descendants of the
former now residing, so far as known, in Kentucky, and of the other
in Kentucky, Tennessee and Missouri, Jane was never married.
The descendants of Henry Cousins now residing chiefly in Virginia
have the family names of Cousins, V/orsham, Robertson, Chambers, Fer-
guson, Williamson and Pritchett, with other connections resulting
from marriages into these families.
It may be said that in both of these lines of descent strong and
fixed traits of character have been conveyed from one generation to
another. Almost loniversally the generations in these two lines of
lineal succession have been of eminent respectability and many mem-
bers of these families have had prominent standing in society.
As stated elsewhere the issues of the marriage of Richard Browder,
one of the joint heads of the generations contained in this record, so
far as known were David, Littleberry, William and Mary. There may
have been others, but if so they are not known.
Littleberry married and raised a family of four children, viz.:
David, Mary, Thomas and V/innefred, whose descendants now reside in
Kentucky, Tennessee, Illinois, Kansas, and Iowa so far as is known.
Mary, daughter of Richard Browder, married Mr. Pentecost and
resided and died in Virginia without issue.
Nothing is known of the history or descendants of William, son
of Richard Brov/der. It is probable that some of the Browders re-
siding in Ohio, Tennessee, Alabama, North Carolina and western Ken-
tucky may have descended from him, but there are no available means
for establishing this as a fact.
David Browder, son of Richard Browder, married Mary Pegram,
who died shortly after marriage, leaving one child- -a daughter- -
who married Anthony Sydnor and this is the fact which connects
the Browder and Sydnor families,
David Browder's second marriage was with Mary Cousins, as here-
tofore stated, and there are no authentic records as to the date of
birth, marriage or death of either. It is certain that both were
bom, resided and died in Virginia. So far as is known, six children
were the issues of this marriage, viz.: Richard, William Cousins,
Robert, Ann W., Almeda and Jane, These descendants all married in
Virginia except Robert and Jane, all emigrated to Kentucky at an
eady day, settling first in Green County and finally in Logan County,
where their descendants were reared and now mostly reside.

information used in making it was derived from authentic sources,
while the smaller part was obtained necessarily from traditional
knowledge and the facts secured from the most reliable informants
were adopted and used, V/hile it may not be fully correct, it is as
nearly so as it can be made in the absence of much necessary and
authentic record. The leading and essential facts I am satisfied are
correct, while some of the minor details may not be fully so.

THE SYDNOR BRMCH OF THE FMILY
The above record, as traced by my cousin, Thomas E. Browder,
embraces the descendants of our grandfather and mother, David and Mary
Cousins Browder, only as it incidentally refers to his first marriage
with Mary Pegram and the marriage of their only child and daughter,
Mary Browder, to Anthony Sydnor of Virginia. The following is the
best outline record that can be gotten in time for this publication,
but in the larger work that will embrace a record of the entire Browder
family in this co^lntry, information to be embocied in which I am
collecting as rapidly as possible, I shall endeavor to get a fuller
and more complete record as to dates, etc., of the descendants of
Anthony and Mary Browder Sydnor. There were born to them seven children -
five boys and two girls, as follows: Joseph, David B., Edward, Martha,
Sarah Ann, Thomas A., and Baker Sydnor.
Joseph Sydnor, son of Anthony and Mary Browder Sydnor, was bom
in Virginia in 1801, and moved with the Browder and Sydnor families

Caleb, V/illiam and James Sydnor, Caleb lived to be a grown man, but
never married, ^e went to Texas in quest of health and died there
about fifteen years ago, William died when about twelve years of age,
James Sydnor, son of David and Piety Sydnor, (date of birth un-
known) married Miss Mollie Sun of Texas, and now resides in that state.
Date of marriage and names of children iinknown.

October 29, 1868, was married December 22, 1891, to Miss Mary Collins.
32
The issue from this marriage was one child, a girl, whose name is
Fannie, I think, the father dying soon after its birth, December 12,
1893.
Laura Sydnor, daughter of David E. and Frances Sydnor, was born
July 26, 1870. She married Robert Mason of Mori^anf ield, Ky., May 6,

24, 1864. There was only one child, Katie H. Browder, born September

no children.

born in 1807; married (date unknown) Paschal V/illiams of Green Co.,

record of their families.
Sarah Ann Sydnor, daughter of Anthony and Mary Brovrder Sydnor,
was born in 1809. She married John Bailey of Green Co., Ky., and
the issues of their marriage were four sons--John, Thomas, Robert,
and William. I know nothing of the dates of their birth or marriage;
in fact I know not whether any have families, except Thomas J,, who
married Mollie Hutchings, daughter of Dr. George H. Kutchings, and
the record of whose family has already been given in the preceding
record of the Browder family.
Thomas A. Sydnor, son of Anthony and Mary Browder Sydnor, was
born in 1811; married to Sarah Walthal of Green County, I suppose
(date xmknown), and there was bom to them the following children:
34

by me further than that they reside in Hart County, Ky., or did x^rhen
I last heard from them.
Baker Sydnor, son of /u:\thony and Mary Brov/der Sydnor, was bom
in Virginia (as were the rest of his brothers and sisters) in 1813,
He never married and died in Russellville, Ky,, in 1833 with cholera.
This completes the record of David Browder 's descendants by his
two wives Mary Pegram and Mary Cousins Browder, That of grand-
father's brothers. Rev, Littleberry and William Browder, the only two
that are positively known to me, will be embraced in the general his-
tory which I am endeavoring to compile of the entire family in this
country. Nothing was known to us prior to the getting up of this
record, of Uncle William's descendants, but I have information which
seems conclusive that the North Carolina Brov/ders, who finally emigrated
to Tennessee and settled in Monroe Co,, near Sweetwater, are some of
his descendants. They are an intelligent and prosperous people and
rank high in the conmiunities in which tliey reside, and like the Browders
everywhere I have found them, are the patrons of education and religion,
of all that is noblest and best in life,
I feel that we owe a debt of gratitude to Cousin Thomas E,
Browder, who got up this family record, and Cousin Jack P. Moore,
who incited him to the good work. Their efforts have aroused in me
an earnest desire to have a full and as complete history of the entire
family as can be obtained, and to that end 1 have already collected
a great deal of very interesting information, and if I can get the
cooperation of all the members of our great and honored family, I
shall succeed in accomplishing the desired result, God being willing.
35
This general record will be a surprise to all, as the family is much
more numerous than any have suspected. I'here are several different
branches I have found, one or more of which is larger than our own;
and if this record could be interspersed (as it should be) with bio-
graphical sketches of the prominent men and women of the family, with
half tone likenesses of same, it would make a very interesting his-
tory not only to those of us who are now living, but to our posterity.
My plan is to get some member of each branch to get up personal
sketches and furnish pictures of the prominent members of their
particular families, which they wish inserted. This I think v/ould
stimulate the interest of all and make a more satisfactory history.
I would like to have an expression from those who read this and are
interested in the matter as to their willingness to cooperate with
me and share the expense of such an undertaking with me. I have not
undertaken this work with the purpose of making money out of it,
but have been actuated simply and solely by the love I bear my family
and the pride I have in its noble history and the desire to transmit
it to our children after us. I shall never cease to thank God for our
noble parentage. They have left us an imperishable heritage. The
heritage of a noble and good name that I prize more highly than all
the honors or riches that the world can bestow, and which I had
rather bequeath to my children than the wealth of the world.
My highest ambition in life is to be like my noble and saintly
father and mother, and have the love and respect and admiration of
all who know me in the same degree which they had from all who knew
them, and if I can only succeed in impressing myself upon my children
36
and upon the generation in which I live as they impressed themselves
upon their children and upon the generation in which they lived, I
shall always praise God that he permitted me to live in this world,
DAVID P. BRO\VDER
Since getting out the little pamphlet- -Genealogy of David
Brov^der and Descendants--! have found some earlier history, obtained
by my nephew. Rev. R. W. Browder, from his father. Rev. George R,
Browder, who got it from our father, Robert Brov/der. It is as
follows:
One ----- Browder, an Englishman, married a Welsh woman, and
emigrated to America early in the 18th century, and settled in
Virginia, x^rhere he lived and died. His name has not been retained
in the family. The children of these progenetors of the Browder
family were Richard, Joseph, Arthur, George and Nancy, as far as
known. Nancy married a Mr, Poole,
Richard Browder married a Miss Mary Thompson, as recorded in the
above-mentioned history, and the following children were born to
them, Susannah, John, Charles, William, David, Littleberry, Thompson,
Mary, Martha, Nancy, and Wilmuth, Susannah married first John Thacker
to whom were bom three children, Mary, Nancy, and David Thacker.
She married the second time George Timmons and the issues of this
marriage were Elizabeth, Susan, and Martha Timmons, John Brov/der, son
of Richard and Mary Thompson Brov/der was killed when a boy by the
accidental discharge of a gun, Charles Browder, son of Richard and
Mary Thompson Browder, volunteered as a soldier in the Revolutionary
War and died of disease in camp about the year 1773,
David Browder' s history has already been given in record just
completed. Thompson Browder, son of Richard and Mary Thompson
Browder, married (to whom unknown) and his children were Benjamin,
Elizabeth, Johnathan, and others. Martha Browder, daughter of Richard
/
and Mary Thompson Browder, married a cousin Isham Browder. Their
children were Mary and Richard so far as is known,
V/illiam C. Browder, son of Kichard and Mary Thompson Browder,
