T.I.S. Digital Backpack
September 12, 2016
Welcome Back!
Welcome to the 2016-2017 school year! The T.I.S. staff is so excited to welcome students back
into the building. The first day of the school year at T.I.S. was among the smoothest openings
we’ve experienced. Over the course of the first week of school, all students have participated in
community building, grade level assemblies to teach and reinforce our HAWK behavioral
expectation lessons. Our teachers designed brief lessons to teach students about behavioral
expectations at T.I.S. The lessons center on expectations we have for all members of our T.I.S.
Hawk Community. Lessons topics focus on appropriate behavior in the following areas: hallway,
bathroom, cafeteria, playground and bus. Each lesson stresses the importance of the personal
responsibility of each community member. In addition, individual classroom teachers developed
HAWK-based classroom rules and expectations with their students, during these first few days. All
behavioral expectations at T.I.S. emanate from our core values, Have respect, Act responsibly, We
are a community and Keep yourself safe. These values are continually stressed to our HAWK
Community throughout the year.
School Procedures Pickup
The student pickup area is located in the upstairs wing of the building. Parents picking up their child must enter through the upper rear door to TIS. The door is located adjacent to the white modular classroom building in between TIS and Parker. A TIS staff member will open the door for pick up beginning at 3:20. Upon entering the building, all visitors must report to the lecture hall to sign out their child. (See map below)

- Students must be dropped off at the designated student-drop off area
- All students must exit cars from passenger-side doors
- Upon exiting cars, students will walk along a series of crosswalks leading toward T.I.S.

Fifth Grade Chorus
I am very excited about teaching Fifth Grade chorus again this year!!! This
year rehearsals will be on Wednesday mornings from 8:00-8:50 in room
136. Continuing to have Morning chorus will enable the students to learn
more challenging pieces, and be able to strengthen their choral skills.
Getting 50 minutes of singing time, rather than 20 minutes of singing time
during recess chorus, makes a huge difference in student success. Fifth
Grade Chorus will begin on Wednesday morning, September 7th and will
be in Room 136.
There will be a winter and spring concert this year. Attendance is
mandatory for every chorus rehearsal and is a major part of their grade. If
your child is unable to attend a chorus rehearsal please email or call me to
let me know. The concert dates for the 2016-2017 school year are as
follows:
Winter Concert: Wednesday, December 7 at 7:00 at TIS
Snow Date: December 14
Spring Concert: Wednesday, April 5 at 7:00pm at TIS
Mark your Calenders!!!
Please fill out the form and have it returned to me by Friday, September
2nd.
Please feel free to email or call me with any questions:

I am very much looking forward to teaching all of your talented children!! I

Tuesday during recess. We will have our spring concert Thursday,
March 30 at 7:00pm. This is the only concert that is done in the
third grade. These students will also be performing an assembly in
the TIS music room for the Birch Grove second graders in the spring.

Recorder Order Time
Dear Parents,
The third grade curriculum uses recorders to teach music literacy.
Each student needs to have his or her own recorder. For health and
educational purposes, we have found that it is better for each student
to own their own recorder and bring it to school for their music classes.
The recorder is an investment in your child’s music education. All the
third, fourth and fifth grade music classes use recorders.
This year we are starting a new program called recorder Karate
where the students have a music packet to practice at home and can
earn colored belts for performing particular pieces with the correct
notes, rhythms, steady beat and good tone quality. The students will
bring their recorders to and from school in order to learn skills in class
and then practice at home. I am very excited about this new program. I would like to give you the opportunity to purchase a recorder through the
school. This is of no advantage to our school, or me, but it is advantageous for
you. First, if I order the recorders in bulk we can pay at least $5.50 less for
each recorder. Also, I can insure that your child will be getting a quality
recorder with good tone quality.
I am offering you the opportunity to order a recorder through Tolland
Intermediate School. Just fill in the form below and send in a check for $5.50
made out to the Tolland Intermediate school student activity fund. Please
return the check and the form before Friday, September 16, 2016. We will
begin using recorders as soon as they are delivered.
Thank you and I hope I have made getting a recorder for your child just a little
easier,
Ms. Judith Baker

TEPTO’S UN-Fundraiser
Dear TEPTO Families and Friends,
The “UN-Fundraiser” is a stress-free and tax-deductible program that has raised thousands of dollars for
our Tolland elementary schools.
As we all know, budget cuts continue to hurt everyone, especially our schools. Our fundraising efforts are
more important than ever. One of our goals is to continue to provide the wonderful programs that our
students enjoy and the “Un-Fundraiser” helps do just that.
Why have we chosen the “UN-Fundraiser?”
No door-to-door sales by students
No sales competitions between neighbors and friends
All donations are tax-deductible
Donations are eligible for corporate matching funds (check with your employer)
100% of the funds go directly to TEPTO with no fees to outside companies
Certain companies will match a donation so please check with your employer and/or companies donate a certain amount in exchange for volunteering at your school for a short amount of time. Please ask for information if you need it.
This school year, TEPTO will spend $55,000 to provide our children with field trips and assemblies,
recess equipment and books; and the staff of Birch Grove and Tolland Intermediate School will receive
classroom and curriculum support.
If you wish to contribute, please clip the coupon below and save a copy of this portion for your tax
