Main goals of an internship

• Acquire relevant industrial experience• More than just getting acquainted with the industrial world

2 options

• Industrial internship (default)• Topic closely related to master/option• Min. 6 weeks• 6 ECTS

• Industrial experience• Min. 4 weeks• 3 ECTS• Shorter report

Procedure (1)

2. Find a company- “ad valvas” of EE/Bach- VTK website https://vtk.be/en/career/internship/- VTK internship fair (OHL Leuven, 27/11, 14h-19h)- personal network

3. Agree with the company on an internship plan - topic, required skills, time period, supervisor from company, compensation, …! Subject different from thesis topic! No internship in research institutes! Agree what you will do in case of problems (e.g. September exams)

4. Have this plan approved by - internship coordinator and - option coordinator http://www.esat.kuleuven.be/education/coordinator- DEADLINE April, 29

5. Insurance form (VGM/HSE file) - to be downloaded from website- Internship place informs the internship coordinator if there are specific risks - DEADLINE May, 1 (due to possible medical exam)- dates on the form = extreme dates (may be more than 6 weeks)- some companies require own form; ask in advance !!

6. Contract- model contract KU Leuven to be downloaded from website- some companies want modifications / own contract- internship with salary -> 2 contracts- DEADLINE June, 1

Internships abroad (esp. outside Europe)

• Apply for the necessary visa in time• Don’t forget vaccinations (up to 6 months before departure; see www.itg.be )• Some destinations are not recommended. Look at the web site

www.diplomatie.be . • Buy yourself a minimum of extra insurances (travel, health, …). The KU

Leuven insurance only covers work accidents and limited liability if you damage some property of the company.• Outside EU a travel insurance is mandatory. Minimally: cancellation,

responsibility, accidents, illness and repatriation. Paid back by KU Leuven if you get a grant from the Flemish community, unless you get it through your parents.

Before/during internship

• Let us know ASAP if something goes wrong• Topic changed, illness of yourself or the company supervisor• Supervisor not (or too little) available• Accident (fortunately it did not happen up to now)

After the internship - evaluation

• Confirm by email that you will enter internship in ISP (before start academic year)

• Hand in report early October (see web site)• Use the same standards as for a thesis and look at the web site

• Prepare a defence presentation (15’+15’ questions)• Normally second half of october• The company supervisor is invited to this presentation

Final recommendations

• Best between 1st and 2d Master, also possible between Bachelor and Master, if sufficient knowledge available (to be confirmed by the internship co-ordinator)

• A traineeship started without prior approval will not be approved.

• Short internship (experience: 4 weeks) is exceptionally possible (if well motivated). Only size of report differs. Rest equal.

• Enter internship in ISP only after the internship took place
