Overview: PhD Scholarship - The role of social media in remote/rural plant biosecurity
surveillance
The Plant Biosecurity CRC is now calling for expressions of interest from potential PhD
candidates. Candidates must have, or will obtain, an Honours degree at level 2A or above.
The Plant Biosecurity Cooperative Research Centre offers scholarships to students wishing to
undertake training in plant biosecurity.
The PhD scholarship on offer at Charles Darwin University is “The role of social media in
remote/rural plant biosecurity surveillance”.
This project aims to test the hypothesis that e-mapping technologies (such as cloud sourcing
and other e-participatory mapping tools) can provide a tangible way for rural and remote
landholders (including Indigenous landholders and Ranger groups) to provide relevant
knowledge and improve their engagement in biosecurity surveillance.
The project aims to use qualitative and quantitative e-mapping methodologies (including
participatory GIS through case-study analysis) to examine if new technologies to spatially map
local knowledge and sightings of biosecurity threats enhance local landholder engagement
and contribution to plant biosecurity surveillance in remote regions.
The annual stipend is $30,000, plus a generous allowance for operating, travel and
professional development.

Australian Flora Foundation
RESEARCH GRANTS for funding in 2015
The Australian Flora Foundation was established in 1981 with the aim of fostering
scientific research on the biology and cultivation of Australian plants. It was thought that
by encouraging research, a greater awareness of the value of the Australian flora would
be developed resulting in explicit measures for their conservation and utilisation. Funds
for research are raised through the membership of the Foundation, donations from
various sources and the interest from bequests. Grants are available for projects which
commence from December 2014. The Foundation expects to support between two and
four projects at $5000 - $15,000 each in 2015 with possible extension into 2016.
CALL FOR APPLICATIONS: Applications for grants to support original scientific
projects on the biology and cultivation of Australian plants are invited from research
workers in Australia. The Australian Flora Foundation will consider all relevant
applications, with special interest in the following categories:
1) conservation of Australian plant diversity, particularly where there are threats from
climate change
2) the cultivation of Australian plants, to ensure their survival and reduce the threat to
native ecosystems
3) rare and endangered plants
All applications on rare and endangered plants should indicate how the research relates
to the management plan for the species. The Foundation does not fund projects that are
for conference travel, publications, research on orchids, or taxonomy. It gives a low
priority to flora surveys per se.
Projects must be scientifically sound and aim to provide outcomes within the period of
the grant. Applicants must be suitably qualified or identify a qualified project supervisor.
Applications are in two stages. Preliminary applications of two A4 pages should indicate
the purpose of the project, the likely costs and the research protocol. The institution or
company to which the applicant is attached, a contact phone number, email address and
postal address must be included. Please use the form provided. Applicants should pay
particular attention to ensuring that their proposal meets the selection criteria.
Preliminary applications will be accepted until 17th March 2014.
Each application will be evaluated on closeness to the objectives of the Australian Flora
Foundation, the scientific merit of the project, the likely success within the stipulated
timeframe, and the availability of funds. Full applications will be invited from those which
best fit the criteria. Full applications will be assessed by the Scientific Research
Committee and successful applicants notified in September 2014. Funds will become
available to commence research from December 2014.
Applications should preferably be submitted electronically as a PDF file plus a MS Word
file attached to an email to Peter Goodwin at pbgoodwin@iinet.net.au

Road agencies are stewards of the largest publicly-owned asset in Australasia – the road network, currently valued at in excess of $200 billion. They spend $16 billion annually maintaining and extending this network. Dependent on this network is a freight task worth $60 billion which, together with other road-based tasks, is also responsible for 16% of Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions – around 80 million tonne of CO2e per annum.
The research required to keep knowledge relevant in the face of technical, environmental and legislative changes and increasing population is considerable. So too is the need for trained researchers and thinkers in road transport operations and infrastructure.
These research support grants are intended to fund the training of aspiring researchers though support for university-initiated research projects.
FUNDING AND APPLICATION PROCESS
ARRB makes available funds for these research support grants. For 2014, the total available is $80,000. Individual grants can be for multiple years, with an annual limit of $30,000 and a total limit for each project of $50,000. Supporting or partly-supporting a Master’s degree or PhD scholarship is an acceptable use of the funds.
Applications for funding open on 1 January 1 2014 and close on 28 February 2014. Each application will be assessed to determine whether it meets the research capability development objective and is likely to be relevant to Australian road agencies. This assessment will be carried out by ARRB’s technical leaders, who may contact the nominated project leader for information over and above that contained in the application. ARRB will then offer to support the best of the applications by 31 March 2014.
All applications endorsed by ARRB’s senior technical staff as meeting the capability development and road agency objectives, but not funded, will result in the applicant being informed of the endorsement but lack of available funds, and re-application in the new funding year invited. If the applicants wish, they can then ask ARRB, by return e-mail, to circulate a summary of the project to, and invite financial support from, state, territory, federal and local government bodies responsible for roads. ARRB will do this twice yearly, by 31 March and 30 September each year. ARRB will put interested road agencies directly in touch with the project leader as soon as the agency advises them of their interest.
Those applications not endorsed as meeting capability development objectives and road agency objectives are not eligible for re-submission.
Applications must be submitted through the university’s research office, in .pdf format, to researchgrants@arrb.com.au.
If you are interested in applying please contact the Research Grants and Business
Development team (RGBD@cdu.edu.au) for more information and grants application forms.
