For the second day in a row,India today successfully con-ducted trial of its indigenouslydeveloped surface-to-air 'Akash'missile, which has a strike rangeof 25 km, from a test range inOdisha as part of a user trial bythe Air Force.

"The sophisticated Akashmissile was test-fired from

Describing the trials as "fullysuccessful", ITR Director M V KV Prasad said, "The entire exer-cise was carried out as part of auser trial by Indian Air Force."

It was a repeat test of yester-day's trial, he said. The trial ofAkash conducted yesterday wasalso successful.

'Akash' is a medium range sur-face-to-air anti-aircraft defencesystem developed by DefenceResearch and DevelopmentOrganisation (DRDO) as part ofthe Integrated Guided MissileDevelopment Programme.

While the Air Force version

has already been inducted, theArmy version is in the finalstage of induction into thearmed forces, the sources said.

The missile has a strike rangeof 25 km and can carry a warheadof 60 kgs. It has the capability totarget aircraft up to 30 km awayand is packed with a battery thatcan track and attack several tar-gets simultaneously, they said.
