Three ways to make my school more environmentally friendly

What is environmental friendly?

• The term “eco-friendly” is used to describe activities which are good for the environment. It is a shortening of “ecologically friendly,” and you may also hear terms like “environmentally friendly” or “green” used to describe similar activities. There are a range of ways in which activities can be eco-friendly, ranging from products which are constructed in an environmentally friendly way to making lifestyle changes which are designed to benefit the environment.

Why do people engage in eco-friendly activities?

• People engage in eco-friendly activities because they are concerned about the health of the environment. Environmental issues were first pushed to the forefront of the collective consciousness in the late 1900s, when people realized that their activities were having a negative impact on the environment. Pollution, rampant use of natural resources, and other activities were questioned in light of information about how these activities hurt the environment, and people began to look into more eco-friendly ways of living and doing business.

HOW TO MAKE MY SCHOOL MORE

ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY?

Lighting

A simple changes can greatly reduce energy consumption by lighting in the school.

• Switch all lights to compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs), which is three to four times more efficient than standard incandescent lamps. Try ordering in bulk and negotiate a competitive bid contract.

• Motion sensors and timers ensure that lights are not wasting energy in empty space.

• Some schools have extended the move to house the children by organizing a fundraising event CFL.

Green Food

Focus today on healthy eating choices for children does not stop with what's on the plate.

• Students can be encouraged to bring your own water bottle instead of buying bottled water or soda from vending machines.

• School cafeterias often use Styrofoam cups, plates, and plastic equipment. Biodegradable varieties available today can be reused and silver plate is not practical.

• Equipment, such as refrigerators, freezers, microwave, toaster, and coffee maker in the canteen must have environmental certification for energy efficiency

Recylcing

• Such as offices, schools produce large amounts of waste paper. Prevent printing one-sided and encourage recycling can go a long way to reduce waste. While some school districts have recycling programs are well developed, others have entered the green movement on the initiative of the students as part of environmental studies class.

• Other schools have begun recycling programs as a fund-raising activities: recycling ink cartridges, cell phones, electronic paper and can be profitable without requiring anyone to buy anything.
