Transcript of This session shows how to make an EduLINCpbla_2018_tesl...Assessment Tools Quiz Auto-graded, timed,...

This session shows how to make an EduLINCcourse more PBLA-compatible.

It will demonstrate how different types of Moodle activities and resources can comprise a PBLA module and will highlight the effectiveness of the Assignment tool in a PBLA context. The presenters will also suggest ways to leverage existing EduLINC course content, including the legacy LINC courseware and PBLA-specific resources.

Assignments and PBLA

The Assignment activity module is used to assign tasks, collect student work and provide grades and individualized action-oriented feedback.

Assignments enable students to:

• upload files

• make online voice recordings

• type their submission directly on the edulinc.org site

• complete offline assignments - tasks that do not require use of a computer to be completed.

The Assignment activity module can help teachers communicate deadlines and collect student submissions in one central area. The date and time of each submission is also recorded.

Individualized Action-Oriented Assignment Feedback

• comments given to students about specific actions they can take in order to improve in a meaningful way

• specific to individual students and can be referenced to assessment criteria as well

• puts a focus on steps that can be taken or goals that can be set for the future to help improve

• help teachers come up with ideas of things that can be worked on more in future modules and planning

Assignment Feedback Modes

Feedback can be delivered to learners through the following modes or technologies:

• Rubrics

• Microsoft Word documents

• Annotated PDFs

• Inline Comments annotated directly on the student’s submission

• Audio using the PoodLL recorder

Assignment RubricsRubrics are a standard means of ensuring transparency and consistency of assessment of course tasks.

There are two ways to create a rubric.

• from scratch (start with a blank document)

• using a template

Assignment Rubric Templates

Instructors can create shared rubrics. To create a shared rubric or rubric template, instructors must create an assignment with an associated rubric.

Instructors can then access this rubric while creating their own assignments.

Annotated Feedback

Student submission text is converted to PDF during grading, making it easier to comment inline using a different colour or other editing tools.

The submission text can also be copied into the feedback comment field during grading, making it easier to edit the original text.

Comments and Feedback Files

Teachers can add text comments including images and hyperlinks to external online resources.

Teachers can also upload feedback files.

Audio Feedback

Teachers can also give verbal feedback with the PoodLLonline voice recorder.

Learners can listen to the feedback online and add it to their online portfolio.

Offline Assignments

Offline assignments make it possible to collect an assessment page or submission based on a real world task.

Teachers can give feedback on these and they can be used by learners as artifacts for the portfolio.
