The Wind Power

of Åland Islands

About Me

• Henrik Lindqvist

• CEO at Allwinds Ab

• Over 20 years in the wind turbine business

• Project manager for all wind turbines at Åland Islands

• Project leader for Båtskär “off shore on the rocks” project

In the beginning of the 90:th Century Ålands Landskaps-

styrelse gave Ålands TekologiCentrum (with Robert2) the mission

to build a modern wind turbine on Åland Islands.

In the same time...

Harry Lindqvist worked with a project consisting of three wind

turbines in the same class (225 – 300 kW) which he wanted to

build on his summer vacation island, Stackskär in Lemland.

In the Beginning

These two projects was the starting point for the wind power in Åland Islands

and the starting point for Ålands Vindenergi Andelslag.

Late 1991 The first wind turbine ”Vinghals”, a Vestas V27 225 kW, was erected on the island Sottunga.

January 1992 “Vinghals” was taken into production

• Founded in February 1994

• Has today approximately 1300 owners; re-found by lower

energy prices or by interest

• Owns seven wind turbines

• Owns 25 % of Leovind AB (Båtskärs wind turbines)

Ålands Vindenergi Andelslag

Ålands Vindkraft Ab

• Founded in year 1997

• Owns five wind turbines on Åland Islands

• 17 owners, both companies and private at Åland

Ålands Vindkraft Ab

Leovind Ab

• Founded in year 2003 due to the Båtskär project

• Owns six wind turbines

• 47 owners, both companies and private on Åland Islands

• Allwinds started January 1st 2011.

• Owned by Ålands Vindenergi Andelslag Ab, Ålands Vindkraft Ab and

Leovind Ab.

• Five full time employees and several part time employees.

• Offers service, maintenance and fault finding on all the 19 wind turbines on

Åland Islands and three turbines on mainland.

• Testsite at Lilla Båtskär is used to test small wind turbines together with

Intertek Semko

• Project and consultant service works in Sweden, Finland and Åland.

• Electricity to customers in Åland Islands. Has 10% of the market -

mainly companies but also private

• Solar panels (mainly bigger projects)

All turbines, except Vinghals and Oskar, has been given names from old sailing

ships that have been good for the community were the turbine stands.

Project Långstenarna is the umbrella term for the three combined projects Långnabba I & II and Stenarna.

Project Långnabba I • Was started in 2006 by Ålands Vindenergi Andelslag, Ålands Vindkraft Ab and Leovind Ab as a continuation of the development of wind power

in Åland after the Båtskär project.

• The project consist of six wind turbines on the Southernmost part of the rural district of Eckerö

• The wind turbines are normal ”onshore sites”

Project Stenarna • Was started in 2006 by Ålands Elandslag as part of the company’s venture in renewable sources of energy

• The project consists of six wind turbines located on islands between the Southernmost parts of the rural districts of Eckerö and Hammarland

• The locations are so called ”semi offshore sites” in accordance with the concept developed in connection with the construction of the Båtskär

project

• Ålands Elandelslag has come to an agreement with Alandia Insurance about a joint venture in the Stenarna project

Project Långnabba II • Was initiated when Ålands Elandelslag commissioned Ålands Vindenergi Andelslag to oversee the planning of the project Stenarna.

• From this followed that the connected power supply from project Stenarna could be transferred to a second phase of Långnabba

• The project consists of four wind turbines at the Southernmost part of the rural district of Eckerö

• The locations are normal ”onshore sites”

- How can we harvest this wind potential in

a smart way and to provide Åland Island

with 100 % renewable electricity from it ?

Finally the big question:
