 The Sketchbook 

Get serious. Draw every day, at least one thing from observation and lots from your imagination.Date every page.

Practice the basics and hone both your observational and cartooning skills.

 Treat your sketchbook like your cell phone ² take it everywhere, all the time. Draw while waiting forclass, draw while drinking coffee, draw while watching tv, etc. A few minutes here and there add upto a good day·s worth of drawing.

Devote at least one page per day to observational and imaginative drawing, the other to theassignments below.

Do these first eight assignments in this order. After that you are free to choose your own subjects.Stick with each one ¶til you·re fluent with the concepts and skills and then move on.

 The first eight are the foundation of all cartoon drawing. Master these skills!

1.  Circles insides of circles inside of circles ² animation is full of arcs!2.  Spheres with horizontal and vertical guidelines for the eyes, ears and nose3.  Studies in one point perspective

6.  Rubber hose studies7.  Solids on the move8.  Preston Blair examples of heads and bodies

Mix and match the following assignments. Again, stick with each one ¶til it·s yours. These you cando for the rest of your life.

Every Flash assignment as a series of overlapping or side by side drawings

Model sheets from classic animation (no anime!)

Mickey, Bosko or Olive Oyl in every single conceivable pose

Key drawings of the above character walking, standing up, reaching, falling, jumping, etc.

Gesture drawings from people in public places
