New players on the Norwegian shelf

20.01.2010 30

Results for new players after 1999

w 227 production licences in the initial phasew 61 per cent of these are operated by new companies

w 329 exploration wellsw 69 of the wells were drilled by new operators – 64 wells

in the North Sea, 5 wells in the Norwegian Seaw 122 discoveries – 48 discoveries in awards after 1999w 15 discoveries made by new operators

Acquisition of seismic data

20.01.2010 32

Coexistence – seismic and fisheries

w Mandatory course for fishery expertsw Six courses with more than 100 participants in 2009

w New system for reporting and announcing seismic surveys on www.npd.no

w Tracking requirement for seismic acquisition vessels

w Cooperation agreement between the NPD, the Directorate of Fisheries and the Norwegian Coast Guard

NPD seismic 2009 – NordlandVII/Troms II

20.01.2010 34

Carbon capture and storage (CCS)

20.01.2010 35

Geological CO2 storage

w The NPD maps suitable areas for storage of CO2

w Joint European regulations for such storage will be in place by June 2011. In a longer term perspective, import of CO2 from Europe to the Norwegian shelf may be of interest.

w CO2 is currently being stored on the Norwegian shelf, at Sleipner in the Utsira formation and at Snøhvit in the Tubåen formation

w CO2 can be used to extract more oil from the fields

w Shut-down fields can be suitable locations for storing CO2

20.01.2010 36

Climate Cure 2020

w Work initiated by the Government, led by the Norwegian Pollution Control Authority (SFT)w The purpose is to identify measures that can help

achieve the Government’s climate goalsw The NPD’s contribution:w Sector analysis for the petroleum activitiesw Report on CCS – carbon capture and storage – both for the

petroleum industry and land-based industry with significant greenhouse gas emissions

w Climate Cure 2020 will be presented in February
