THE PASTOR’S CORNER
T he sun is shining, water is dripping outside the window where I sit in this little coffee shop. The storm is past and a little
squirrel plays in the summer sun. All very ordinary. But what was not ordinary was that through the worst of the storm this morning, a bird kept singing strong and loud. Amazing! Perhaps you, too, have heard something similar that shocks you out of the moment and makes you smile, or at least wonder. I love it when things like that happen, when an ordinary song of a bird becomes extraordinary.
We can see things and hear things many times and in many ways, and then, all of a sudden, something extraordinary happens and we see things a new way, a different way. This happens all the time with Scripture. We have read it, heard it, know the stories, when, all of a sudden, the Holy Spirit takes us to a new place and opens our eyes to something we have not noticed before. This is what makes Scripture exciting – looking for the extraordinary, seeing around us parallels with our ordinary lives. The Holy Spirit is active and working in us, making Scripture new and fresh with each reading…thank you, God, for this gift! Therefore, take a peek at the Sunday texts, and journey with the Word… Sunday, July 5th: Psalm 123; Ezekial 2:1-5; 2 Corinthians 12:2-10; Mark 6:1-13 Sunday, July 12th: Psalm 85:8-12-13; Amos 7:7-15; Ephesians 1:3-14; Mark 6:14-29 Sunday, July 19: Psalm 23; Jeremiah 23:1-6; Ephesians 2:11-22; Mark 6:30-34,53-56 Sunday, July 26th: Psalm 145:10-18; 2 Kings 4:42-44; Ephesians 3:14-21; Mark 6:1-21.
Blessings on your summer journey.

May 30 and 31, 2015 (Davies Center, Univ. of WI, Eau Claire) Pastor Mary, Dianne Zaiser and Bonnie Ristola attended from Long Lake Lutheran. During Saturday numerous workshops centering around the main emphasis of the assembly “The Generosity Project” were held. Pastor Mary attended a number of the “Walking Together” sessions. The keynote speaker (Saturday night) was Nathan Dungan, founder and president of Share, Save, Spend. He helped us think about our attitudes toward giving and what we have taught the next generation about generosity. Mr. Dungan has been an industry leader in helping individuals and families align their values with their money decisions. According to Dungan “the choices we make with our money can change the world”. At the Sunday morning worship service one of our own Long Lake Lutheran members, Rev. Ed Zaiser was recognized for his 50th year anniversary of his ordination.

Five resolutions were presented to the assembly. They were: 1) Enabling Resolution for the Northwest Synod--Retain the services of Kairos & Associates to assess the mission and work of the Northwest Synod and discover needs and inspire generosity. 2) Financial Mission Plan--Budget 3) Life of Faith Initiative--Calling to serve neighbors in all the world. 4) 2016 Minimum Standards for Compensation and Benefits 5) Congregational Renewal--Provide renewal opportunities for congregations. At this point 76% of congregations are in decline in attendance. All five resolutions passed. Candidates were elected to serve on the Synod Council and as voting members for the 2016 Churchwide Assembly. Some figures presented by ELCA Headquarters: --Our synod is the third lowest in the ELCA for mission support. 70% of our congregations pass on less than 4% of their operating budget. --The ELCA raised $13.9 million in 2014 for the malaria bed net project. --Fifty-three new ELCA churches were started in the past year. --Our synod continues to be a mission partner with Malawi. --This year’s synod assembly offering will be given to the 2016 Pastor’s Academy in Malawi.

STEWARDSHIP
We have now completed six months of our fiscal year at Long Lake Lutheran Church. We suspect that our
congregation is not different than others, where the giving units generally fall into three groups.
THE SAINTS – We do not ask more of them and are grateful for the example they set for those that are
DEPENDABLE and for those that are BLESSED.
THE DEPENDABLE – We at Long Lake Lutheran Church are fortunate to have many giving units that we depend
upon year after year. These folks understand that our church operating expenses increase 3-5% each year and we must, and do, rely on them. The Bible has much to
say about those we depend on!
But if anyone has enough money to live well and sees a brother or sister in need and refuses to help – how can
God’s love be in that person? (John 3:17)
I tell you, use your worldly resources to benefit others and make friends. In this way your generosity stores up a
reward for you in heaven. (Luke 16:9)
The DEPENDABLES are those that we must count on year after year.
