Global Mission: A Visit with St. Andrew’s Global Mission Partners

On Sunday morning, June 5th, during our education hour at 9:15 am, we’ll be treated to a “morning with our missionaries” featuring Dr Glen and Debbie Petta (top left photo) of SOMA USA and Summer and Guy Benton, SAMS missionaries in Cambodia. SOMA and the Bentons are two of St. Andrew’s Global Mission Partners, supported through our Ministry & Mission Committee, with strong ties to our parish over many years. They minister in countries around the world, taking the love of Christ and expanding God’s Kingdom in the places where they serve. On June 5th, these two missionary families will bring to us presentations about their work – two quite different ministry settings – through personal testimonies and images of their life and ministry serving the Lord according to the way God has called them. It will be a wonderful opportunity for us at St. Andrew’s Fort Worth to experience a “taste” of Christian ministry on the front lines of the global Church, including countries where Christians are persecuted for being followers of Jesus.

Led by our own Dr. Glen Petta, SOMA USA (Sharing of Ministries Abroad) is an international mission agency “called by God to serve the Anglican Communion and the worldwide Church through short-term, cross-cultural missions both locally and abroad, ministering to the clergy and lay leaders alike.” Missions are planned in response to invitations by bishops and archbishops and, in recent years, have served a wide array of dioceses and provinces in Africa, Asia, Central and South America, Australia and the US (“Mission to the USA”). The needs and settings vary from place to place, but SOMA teams generally bring training sessions on discipleship, leadership, inner healing, family relationships and evangelism. Several St. Andrew’s parishioners, as

well as parishioners from other Fort Worth diocesan churches, have participated in SOMA missions and can attest to the faith-building experience of being part of a SOMA team.

Summer and Guy Benton with their children, Pirum and Quinn (top right photo), serve as SAMS missionaries in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, where Guy is Youth Director for the Anglican Church of Cambodia (ACC). His main job is to grow and strengthen youth ministry in the deanery of Cambodia for those working with youth throughout their area. He also has a smaller role with the Khmer youth group in the city church in Phnom Penh where he is helping to develop leadership and design a dynamic youth program in the city church, with potential to influence the village church ministries. Summer served for several years (before marriage to Guy) as a counselor in a ministry where young women bound in the sex trafficking trade in Phnom Penh are rescued and helped to a new life of freedom. Now, in addition to “Job 1” as mom to Quinn (20 months) and Pirum (13 years), Summer works part time work providing counseling to missionaries working in various ministries in Cambodia. Most of her current caseload is with those working in anti-trafficking ministry, work that she knows well and where secondary and vicarious trauma is a very real concern for people doing anti-trafficking work.

Don’t miss this special opportunity on Sunday morning, June 5th, to meet the Pettas and the Bentons and hear about Christian ministry in these far flung places, stories of personal transformation and miracle healings, and the joys as well as challenges in serving God’s people where following Jesus can often bring persecution. We will find encouragement and inspiration from the amazing Christian witness of these dedicated servants.

We have set the following VBS work days and work nights. We invite you and your family to come join in these work sessions. We will be working on a rocket, a space station, background panels, stars and planets, and other scenery for Moncrief Hall and for other areas in the parish house, including the preschool, elementary, and youth areas. The VBS crafts committee may also have things to be worked on at church. Please come join in the fellowship and fun, and help us get ready for VBS. You do not have to be a master carpenter or a fine artist to join in these projects! As the weeks go on, we will also add several VBS committee meetings and training sessions to this calendar. A nursery will not be provided for most of these work days and work nights, though it will be provided for several work sessions and committee meetings as the week of VBS draws a bit closer. Come join us!
