Atrium Space

The promenade provides an interior/exterior public space for the city where art can be displayed and events can be staged. The museum’s galleries rise above the promenade, while the vertical members of the laminated timber structure create a warm and comforting atmosphere. Informal performances, gatherings, public installations, movies, plays, fairs and public exhibitions can inhabit the space.

Gallery spaces are designed for maximum flexibility as open floor plans that can accommodate a variety of curatorial needs. All of the museum’s galleries feature indirect natural top lighting. The laminated tim-ber frame structure is expressed in the ceiling. Situated between the structural members is an operable baffle system that will deflect natural light into the space, while providing acoustic absorption. The baf-

fles can be mechanically manipulated to black out the galleries completely.

Mid-Level Gallery

The top gallery is framed by the view of the city center.

The Mid-Level gallery is framed by the view of the city center.

Skylight SystemA panel system hanging from the structural frames allows for a ranging degree of diff used light to illuminate the galleries.

Offi ces/ Collections storage and management At ground level, the offi ces and storage facili es are at a convenient loca on to receive, ship, and store art.

Wall Panel SystemWall panels vary in space, fre-quency and density based on interior programma c needs and direct solar ligh ng analy-sis. Panel spacing also enables water collec on and helps with drainage.

Panel SystemPanels that ro-tate and shi allow museum to control the light within the gallery.

PRE-FABRICATED TIMBER FRAMEPrefab mber and cross-laminate mber panels allow for faster construc on me in addi on to reducing the overall cost and carbon footprint of the building. U lizing one of natures more renewable resources.

BAFFLESMove-able baffl es that work with the ligh ng systems throughout the building may vary in density and loca on based on programma c needs below. This will generate an ever changing ceiling condi on.

SKYLIGHTWorking with the baffl es and pre-fabricated mber frame to add rigidity and expedite

the construc on process. The skylights are a poten al opportunity to control water run off and gray water systems.

INNOVATIVE USE OF TIMBERThe innova ve use of cross laminated mber allows for a structure that is more sustainable to produce and construct. Reducing cost, construc on me and carbon footprint.

WATER COLLECTIONThe water that is collected from the fog collec on and condense water collec on will be stored in a subterranean water tank that will then circulate the water to meet the building’s needs.

FOG COLLECTIONThe use of polypropylene meshes to collect clean water from the environment. Each square meter could collect up to 10 liters of water a day.

CONDENSE WATER COLLECTIONBy suspending the polypropylene in the air the mesh could collect condense water par cles from the air.

TECHNOLOGY AND PROJECTIONSPanels can vary in both size, type and func on allowing them to accommodate a wide variety of usages. LCD screens and projec on methods can be built within the wall or move-able throughout.

LIGHTING Light control is done through a series of baffl es who’s interval and density are in response to the programma c needs below. Allowing for a varied light and shadow condi on throughout.

MECHANICAL SYSTEMS Operate with and in support of passive environmental building systems.

SECTION OF ELEVATED GALLERY

AXON OF WOOD STRUCTURAL FRAME

The general structural organiza on of the galleries is a combina on of prefabricated technologies and simple mber construc on. A standard interval is used throughout to accommodate mass produc on while the ordering of columns, pillars and support revolve around a modifi ca on of Horton’s ra o for general hydrology. A morphometric constant of ra ons of bifurca on and the rela ve length of each segment uni ng one another.

Primary Structure - Gluelam

Secondary Structure- CLT Panels

Baffl es, density and spacing vary based on loca on

Skylights

Shading panels vary in material, frequency and density to provide

indirect light while collec ng water.

GH-3358585930The building operates as a series of integrated prefabricated layers, each layer supporting the next and building upon itself. The structural frame is composed of a combination of locally sourced glulam trusses and cross laminated timber panels. Reducing the carbon footprint while decreasing build time. The cross laminated timber panels also provide sheer support and a backing for the fog & water collection systems which are integrated into the exterior cladding. The exterior cladding is a series of insulated panels that vary in density, spacing and frequency based on environmental conditions and lighting re-quirements for interior program. The panels add texture to the exterior of the museum while trapping and rerouting condensa-tion from the prevailing sea breeze, rainwater and fog. The flexi-ble baffle systems also aids in this performance while reflecting natural light to illuminate the space during the day, reducing energy consumption and providing dramatic interior conditions. Collectively each system is built upon itself to provide an en-vironmentally conscious building that has reduced its carbon footprint while continually running at a high level of performance and producing its own water source.
