The Gateway to the City of Knowledge, Sayyidina Ali (R.A.), once asked a beautiful question to the Beloved Messenger ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص “O Messenger of Allah ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص What is your Sunnah?”

The beloved Messenger replied: “Intimate Knowledge of Allah is my Capital; Intellect is the Root of my Religion…..”

Upon you is my Sunnah

من تمسك بسنتي عند فساد أمتي فلھ أجر ماءة شھیدWhoever holds on to my Sunnah during the time of fitna in my Ummah will get the reward of a hundred martyrs

فمن رغب أن سنتي فلیس منيThat person who turns away from my Sunnah is not from amongst us

THREE TYPES OF TA’ARUF1. With People:

ن ذكر وأنثى وج وا إن أكر علناكم شعوبا وقبائل لتعارف یا أیھا الناس إنا خلقناكم م مكم عند ا�أتقاكم

O mankind! We created you from a single (pair) of a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes, that ye may know each other (not that ye may despise (each other). Verily the most honored of you in the sight of Allah is (he who is) the most righteous of you. ( 49:13)

THREE TYPES OF TA’ARUF2. Knowing your own self

نس إال لیعبدون وما خلقت الجن واإلAnd I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me. (51:56)

THREE TYPES OF TA’ARUF3. Knowing Allah (swt)

من عرف نفسھ فقد عرف ربھ

He who recognizes his own self recognizes his Lord (mashaikh)

WE DON’T VALUE SOMETHING UNTIL WE RECOGNIZE IT’S TRUE WORTH

نسان لربھ إن لكنود اإل

لك لشھید وإنھ على ذIndeed mankind, to his Lord, is ungrateful. And indeed, he is to that a witness. (100:6-7)

حق قدره وما قدروا ا�And they do not assign to Allah the attributes due to Him (6:91)

WHO IS AN `ARIF?Shibli (rah): That person who recognizes the Greatness of Allah swt and lives his entire life according to His Wishes

Junaid Baghdadi (rah): That person who fulfills the Wishes of Allah swt in all of his states

Dhu-Nun Misri (rah): That person who fears Allah swt in every aspect of his life

ILM OR MA’ARIFAH

سول ترى أعینھم تفیض م ا عرفوا من الحق یقول وإذا سمعوا ما أنزل إلى الر ن ربنا آمنا فاكتبنا ون الدمع ممالشاھدین مع

And when they hear what has been revealed to the Messenger, you see their eyes overflowing with tears because of what they have recognized of the truth. They say, "Our Lord, we have believed, so register us among the witnesses. (5:83)

ن النھار ی بینھم تعارفون ویوم یحشرھم كأن لم یلبثوا إال ساعة مAnd on the Day when He will gather them, [it will be] as if they had not remained [in the world] but an hour of the day, [and] they will know each other. (10:45)

رون منك ◌جاء إخوة یوسف فدخلوا علیھ فعرفھم وھم لھ وAnd the brothers of Yusuf came [seeking food], and they entered upon him; and he recognized them, but he was to them unknown. (12:58)

ILM OR MA’ARIFAH

ا� ا أنما أنزل بعلم then know that the Qur'an was revealed with the knowledge of Allah (11:14)

علیم ◌ وفوق كل ذي علم but over all endued with knowledge is one, the All-Knowing. (12:76)

ب زدني ق علما◌ل رbut say, "O my Lord! advance me in knowledge.“ (20:114)

MA’RIFAH LEADS TO FEAR OF ALLAH SWT

أنا أعرفكم با� و أشد كم لھ خشیھHadith: “I know Allah swt the most out of all of you and I have the most fear of Him out of all of you”

Intellect is the Root of my Religion

INTELLECT IS THE ROOT OF MY RELIGION

ل اآلیات لقوم لك نفص یعقلون كذThus do We detail the verses for a people who use reason. (30:28)

العالمون ال وتلك األمثال نضربھا للناس وما یعقلھا إ As for these similitudes, We coin them for mankind, but none will grasp their meaning save the wise. (29:43)

یعقلون ولقد تركنا منھا آیة بینة لقوم And verily of that We have left a clear sign for people who have sense. (29:35)

INTELLECT IS THE ROOT OF MY RELIGION

روج ف نیناھا وزیناھا وما لھا من أفلم ینظروا إلى السماء فوقھم كیف ب Have they not then observed the sky above them, how We have constructed it and beautified it, and how there are no rifts therein? (50:6)

INTELLECT IS THE ROOT OF MY RELIGIONTwo veils on our intellect:

1. Lust

2. Anger

2. Aqal Muad
