Workshop on the ERA of Non-Target Organisms 2013
“This training was different because the hands-on approach clarified the first principles of tiered risk assessment and how to approach non-target testing from a research perspective. I came to this training with only a basic understanding of the tiered approach to environmental risk assessment and left with a wealth of knowledge on how to conduct and evaluate field/lab NTO studies.”
-GILBERT GUMISIRIZA, BIOSAFETY OFFICER, UGANDA NATIONAL COUNCIL FOR SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY, UGANDA
South Asia Biosafety Conference 2013
“Most of the Biosafety Core Committee members attended the conference and gained experiences on different aspects of GM crop development and their regulations which will be useful in the decision- making process on the field release of GM crops in Bangladesh.”
-DR. NAIYYUM CHOUDHURY, FORMER CHAIRMAN, BANGLADESH ATOMIC ENERGY COMMISSION AND MEMBER, BIOSAFETY CORE COMMITTEE, BANGLADESH
International Symposium on the Biosafety of GMOS 2014
“The symposium was of great interest because apart from giving a theoretical background it also provided an opportunity to ask questions on various areas. It also provided a chance to meet, interact and network with other players in the industry of biotechnology. The symposium was indeed an eye-opener and it covered most aspects of modern biotechnology including risk assessments and regulatory aspects.”
-ERIC KORIR, BIOSAFETY INSPECTOR, NATIONAL BIOSAFETY AUTHORITY, KENYA
Workshop on the ERA of GE Plants 2013
“Following the workshop, participants shared that they have gained a lot of knowledge and important information. They also expressed that the workshop was very helpful for them to complete their duty as members of their technical team and members of their committee.”
-CHI NGOC DANG, VIETNAM COORDINATOR, PROGRAM FOR BIOSAFETY SYSTEMS (PBS), VIETNAM
Workshop on Confined Field Trials of GM Crops 2013
“The advances in science require constant adaptation of regulatory institutions in order to facilitate methodical access to biotechnology. In this sense, I can point out, there has been an improvement of the capabilities of a large number of participants and the updates of the regulatory framework that are being implemented as a result of the activities that are being developed in the framework of the Partnership Program.”
-SANTIAGO BERTONI, DIRECTOR UNIDAD DE COMERCIO INTERNACIONAL E INTEGRACIÓN DEL MINISTERIO DE AGRICULTURA Y GANADERÍA DEL PARAGUAY, PARAGUAY
Workshop on the ERA of Non-Target Organisms 2014
“In addition to the lectures, labs and field works, participants reviewed a variety of proprietary studies submitted as part of regulatory dossiers and were asked to identify key information related to the risk assessment as well as to assess the quality of the studies, identifying strengths and weaknesses. This was both a useful and a successful activity.”
-DR. SYED NURUL ALAM, HEAD, ENTOMOLOGY DIVISION, BANGLADESH AGRICULTURAL RESEARCH INSTITUTE, JOYDEBPUR, GAZIPUR, BANGLADESH
Meeting of the OECD Harmonisation of Regulatory Oversight in Biotechnology Working Group 2014
“The participation in these meetings is relevant because, due to the experience achieved in Colombia, it is possible to contribute to the debate and the exchange of information with other countries, and in turn it is a way of strengthening the processes and mechanisms used in the risk assessment for living modified organisms at a national level.”
-DRA. ANA LUISA DIAZ, DIRECTORA TÉCHNICA DE SEMILLAS, ICA BOGOTA AND DR. MARTIN EMILIO RODRIGUEZ, PROFESIONAL EPECIALIZADO, SEMILLAS, ICA BOGOTA, COLOMBIA
Workshop on the ERA of Non-Target Organisms 2013
“The Ames workshop was a unique opportunity to get hands-on experience on how to obtain necessary data for assessing the impact of Bt crops on non-target organisms. When reviewing applications, I will be much more focused on what is of real concern, and when asking for additional information, I will have a feeling on how much it costs in terms of time, labor and finance. In that respect, the workshop has improved my ability to provide more sound regulatory advice to the decision making bodies.”
-THOMAS BWANA, PRINCIPAL ENVIRONMENTAL OFFICER FOR BIOSAFETY, ENVIRONMENT DIRECTORATE, TANZANIA
