SAINT MOTHER TERESA OF CALCUTTA

The Parish of Born: Anjeze Gonxhe Bojaxhiu, August 26, 1910 Died: September 5, 1997 Canonized: September 4, 2016

Founded 1912 Founded 1909

Padre’s Corner April 7, 2019 Fifth Sunday of Lent “Santa Beatriz de Silva – Purisma Concepcion” is the name of the convent my Mexico pilgrimage group stayed with last November 27 – December 3. Five centuries in that locale of Mexico City, these cloistered nuns promise each person that passes through their sacred doors a lifetime of future prayers. Most people in Mexico struggle to make money, often resorting to desperate measures of begging at cars and trying to sell little trinkets. The nuns, before groups began to stay with them, tried to make some income by selling cookies at churches that would allow them to do so. God has changed their stream of revenue, and I am happy for those wonderful women. Their examples encourage us in hard times. While in Mexico, I was able to read a book entitled “Jesus of Nazareth – The Hidden Years.” Written in 1962 by Robert Aron, this spiritual gem was purchased for only a few dollars while on the parish Scandinavia journey to Denmark (Copenhagen) in September. Aron concluded his theological analysis with this probing question: “If the Jesus of the hidden years were to come back in our day to his reborn native land of Israel…to tread again the streets of Nazareth or the road to Jerusalem, he would find a world prey to the same anxieties as those of two thousand years ago. Are we not now at another turning point of history, at a moment of confusion, when once more the future of mankind hangs in the balance?...Today the revealed religions of Judaism and Christianity are confronted not with idolaters but with deliberate unbelievers, who officially obliterate the notion of God. Today’s crisis is far more grave than that of two thousand years ago. It is a question of whether or not the revealed religions can survive.” Mind you, Aron wrote this book one year before the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Unlike today, the Church then had abundant religious vocations and filled pews for Mass plus tons of children to influence with at-capacity parochial schools. Back to the cloistered nuns in Mexico, whose setting reminded me of Sister Bertrille (Sally Field) in “The Flying Nun” at the “San Tanco Convent” in Puerto Rico (a television series the same time as the aforementioned book). What can be found in their sacred enclosure, or any place of worship, to lift our spirits out of the doldrums and fears of modern-day life? Hence this Facebook posting on December 1, 2018: “Our second day at another residential dump, was within easy view of the airport and shopping districts. However, a different outlook this first day of December. The shacks are still here for the people and the wandering dogs, but they find comfort in each other. A chapel was also built out of the garbage, but firmly constructed as a manifestation of their faith unlike their homes on soft foundations. The dogs are actually healthy and well-fed, because of the wide availability of food in the garbage. There was a joy at the Mass celebrated, all dogs (go to Heaven) invited. I still pray all the people and animals find better homes one day, but in the meantime this is the Catholic Church at its most beautiful: working with the poor. The late Sir Alec Guinness, in his autobiography “Blessings and Disguise”, recalled acting as a priest decades ago in France. During a break in the filming, a young boy came up to him to say hello believing he was a real priest. Sir Alec converted to Catholicism shortly thereafter, realizing that no church that cultivated that type of respect and trust could be all that bad. An important consideration in troubled times for the Church. When Jesus was born in a dirty animal stable in Bethlehem, it had all the smells of the dumps in Mexico City with many wildlife gathered. None were excluded from coming, even the flies. At both Masses said in the barren settings, one could go back in time to that starry night with the three wise magi approaching. The animals were at home, and after all the reverse of “God” is “Dog.” This was the Church at its core, liberating all in prayer and sacramental grace to experience Him more fully. The dogs intermingling and sleeping during the Masses, did not bother me in the least. They felt safe, welcome, connected, loved and important. Despite the limits and imperfections of each of us, especially me, my hopeful wish is that this will be the atmosphere of Saint Mother Teresa of Calcutta Parish.

TODAY FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT

First Reading: Isaiah 43:16-21 God says not to remember the events from long ago, but to focus on the things he plans to do next. He also claims he will again help his chosen people when they need him. Second Reading: Philippians 3:8-14 Paul describes knowledge of Jesus as more important than knowledge of the Old Law. He wishes to share in the power of Jesus' resurrection, and speaks of concentrating on the finish line of the race with salvation as the prize to be won. Gospel: John 8:1-11 Jesus preached forgiveness of sin, but in the old law those accused of adultery were to be stoned. So the Pharisees tried to trap Jesus and brought a woman accused of adultery to him, asking him what he would do to her. Jesus asked that one without sin cast the first stone, and then all of the elders left. Jesus told the woman that he did not condemn her, but warned her to avoid such sin in the future.
