J TOURS OF THE NEW BUILDING J
J OSGOODE HISTORY & ARCHIVES EXHIBITS JJ SPECIAL MEMENTO GIVEAWAY J
After two years of dislocation I
can tell you that we are all
thrilled to move back to our
newly renovated building. The
Ignat Kaneff Building is truly
magnificent and will mean more
than space and light and new
classrooms. The walls of brick,
ceiling tiles holding back asbestos
and smoke-filled, dimly lit JCR of
my Osgoode days are now truly
just a memory (although a happy
one in the case of the dimly lit JCR, which facilitated a host
of relationships that could never have come to be in the
glare of the new JCR’s floor-to-ceiling windows). The new
building will not only transform the law school experience
for Osgoode’s students, but also be the setting for a whole
new set of memories that will make Osgoode’s newest
house their home.
The building not only represents a state-of-the-art facility
for teaching, research and academic life, but also now
reflects our values as well:
• Achieving LEED Silver Certification reflects our
commitment to sustainability;
• Our building exceeds current accessibility standards and
reflects our commitment to an inclusive community;
• The Law Library, although half the size of its former self,
boasts a richer and more diverse collection of both
physical and digital legal materials than ever before to
support Osgoode’s ambitious research culture;
• The building now features a number of lounges and
meeting areas in addition to a fully wired environment
throughout. The architecture reflects a shared focus on
physical and virtual connectivity.
The building also stands as a testament to the support and
vision of hundreds of donors, from among our alumni and
beyond. The Building Osgoode Campaign, which came to a
close last Fall, represented an enormous landmark for
Osgoode, not just as the largest and most successful
campaign any Canadian law school had ever undertaken,
but as a tangible demonstration of commitment to
Osgoode’s distinct approach to legal education, its role in
the community, and its role in the world. This edition of the
Osgoode Brief highlights and celebrates the donations for
the past year. Without this amazing support, Osgoode would
simply be another law school.
The revitalized building serves as a metaphor for
Osgoode’s programs and priorities. More than ever before,
Osgoode is focused on engagement. The fact that every
Osgoode classroom has windows, and that Osgoode’s
newest wing is a mix of skylights and dramatic floor-to-
ceiling glass is no accident. The new architecture mirrors
Osgoode’s new focus on seeing beyond its walls, and finding
new ways for the Law School’s accomplishments in research
and teaching to be transparent to those peering in. This
engagement is reflected in:
• Innovative partnerships with organizations like the
Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH), the
Canadian Forces Judge Advocate General (JAG), and the
Society of Ontario Adjudicators and Regulators (SOAR).
• New intensive programs in Anti-discrimination Law and
Intellectual Property Law coming on stream this year.
• Commencing next year, all students will complete a clinical,
intensive or simulated course during their legal studies. It is
with pride that in 2011, Osgoode became the first
Canadian law school to recognize experiential learning
as a required element of the JD program.
For all of these reasons, we hope you join Osgoode in its
pursuit of “New Windows on Justice” during this launch year,
including our Osgoode Building Celebration on October 16,
2011, for details visit http://www.osgoode.yorku.ca/renovation.

Professor Trevor Farrow toLead Five-Year ResearchProject on Cost of Justice
The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) has awarded a $1 million grant overfive years to the Canadian Forum on Civil Justice in the Community-University Research AlliancesProgram (CURA) 2010 competition. The Forum, which moved to York last year from the University of Alberta’s Faculty of Law and ispartnered with Osgoode Hall Law School and the York Centre for Public Policy & Law (YCPPL), isone of the country’s leading organizations devoted to interdisciplinary research on civil justice. Osgoode Professor Trevor Farrow, Director of the Clinical Education Program at Osgoode andChair of the Board of the Canadian Forum on Civil Justice, is the Award Holder and PrincipalInvestigator of this important and innovative project called “The Cost of Justice: Weighing theCosts of Fair and Effective Resolution to Legal Problems.” He is joined on the lead research team by Co-Investigators Diana Lowe, Q.C. of Alberta Justiceand Chair of the Forum’s research committee, Professor Lesley Jacobs of York’s Faculty of LiberalArts & Professional Studies who was also the inaugural Director of YCPPL, and Mary Stratton whowas formerly the Forum’s research director. In addition, there are approximately 50 other co-investigators, collaborators and partners including academics, government departments, lawcommissions, law reform agencies, law societies, bar associations, judicial associations and otherindividuals and institutes from around the world. The two main questions the researchers will examine are: What does it cost to deliver civiljustice? And what does it cost to not deliver civil justice? Both questions will be looked at in termsof costs to individuals as well as to society. “There is a significant lack of empirical research on these individual and societal cost questionsgenerally,” Farrow said. “There have been modest attempts internationally and some efforts inCanada, but we very much hope that this will be a groundbreaking study that will really furtherour collective thinking in this area.” Dean Lorne Sossin described the study as “an extremely ambitious research project that willlead to new knowledge about the costs of justice in Canada and which, in turn, will no doubtdrive academic and policy-related thinking here at home and around the world.”

Annual Paid Gifts by Class
Thomas Brown Phillips Stewart (1865–1892) was a
barrister and poet who died at the early age of 27. He left a
portion of his estate to establish a student library at Osgoode
Hall, which later became the largest law library in Canada.
The Thomas Brown Phillips Stewart Society was created to
commemorate Thomas Brown Phillips Stewart as Osgoode’s first
benefactor and to honour all those who, like this generous young
man, made Osgoode Hall Law School a part of their legacy
through a planned gift.
Membership in the Society is offered to those alumni and
friends who wish to donate to Osgoode by means of a planned
gift including charitable bequests, life insurance or other future
arrangements. All members will be recognized annually in the
Osgoode Hall Law School Report on Giving.
We would be pleased to discuss with donors and their
advisors, the many areas within the Law School where
bequests can be directed. We do appreciate the opportunity to
review the terms of the Will (especially for specific bequests)
before they are finalized, so we can confirm our ability to
accept and fulfill the gift’s intent.

Director, Office of Advancement at 416-736-5364 or

As Canada’s first common law school, Osgoode Hall Law School’s history reflects the development of legal
education and ideas in Canada and beyond. Osgoode and its graduates played leading roles in Canada’s political,
legal and social history, from the birth of the welfare state to the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, from clinical
legal education to scholarship in law and society, from the admission of the first woman to the Bar to the
appointment of the first Canadian-born black judge. In October of 2011, we look forward to launching two
exhibits in the Ignat Kaneff Building, Osgoode’s newly renovated building:
Ñ Catalysts – a digital exhibition of Osgoode pioneers who broke through barriers to become
the “firsts” in making the legal community more inclusive; and
Ñ Building Osgoode – a collection of photos, videos and blueprints which chronicle the making
of Osgoode’s building.
Support the Osgoode History & Archives Project and help us bring Osgoode’s history to life for students and future generations. For more information: www.osgoode.yorku.ca/history-archives
