or coin collecting Clubs seem to fold up at an increasing rate
But this time we put on a really successful one-day show It was the best Spring Fair that
we had ever had Everyone was really pleased

JOHN STOKER
Passed away Friday night 26th
September 2014
Members of the Club attended Johnrsquos funeral service held at Penhallrsquos Chapel
in on Friday 3rd October 2014
John was born on 10th December 1928
His family home had been in Scott Avenue Mortdale The Stoker family had been one of the first families to build
a home in the then new Mortdale sub-division His grandfather had been a serious stamp collector This helped lay
the foundations of Johnrsquos life-long interest in the hobby
In his youth John had been an A-grade
tennis player John continued playing tennis in Orange until only a year ago
In the 1930rsquos and 1940rsquos he also took up table tennis He played in amp won competitions in the St George area in
1966 1969 and 1970 John was singles champion at Miranda in 1975 and runner-up in 1977
In 1961 John married Wendy Fenton
Their first home was in Kirrawee the suburb adjacent to Sutherland In 1970 they moved to Sylvania Heights
John worked in Sydney for Metters Ltd Unfortunately Metters the maker of
kitchen stoves closed their Sydney factory in 1982 It took him six months of tossing-up for John to decide whether or
not to take up the offer of a job with their associate Email in Orange Eventually the family (John Wendy and sons Mark
amp Grant) decided to move here - to Email and the house in Heath Place John worked in the payroll section at
Email until his retirement He was very good with arithmetic
John amp Wendy Stoker have been members of our Club since 26 June
1990 Johnrsquos special collecting interest was stamps of the Pacific Islands amp Cocos (Keeling) Islands amp Christmas
Island His displays from these island countries amp territories were often a feature of our Orange Expos amp Spring
Fairs
The other major activity of John amp Wendy Stoker as visitors to their home would attest was the collection of mail
itemsenvelopes form Orange business houses This also entailed soaking off the stamps It was a huge operation The
sale of these ldquorecentrdquo issues raised money for the Girl Guides Charity called the Trefoil Guild
- Page - 5 ORANGE COIN amp STAMP CLUB INC NEWSLETTER FOR OCTOBER 2014
On his visitations around the business houses collecting envelopes John would
sell them Club raffle tickets for whatever show was coming up next He was called ldquothe Clubrsquos principal fund-raiserrdquo
for good reason
Since joining John (amp Wendy) Stoker fully participated in every event the Club ever held They were also both regular
attendees of the Wagga stamp fairs Their absence was certainly missed at our just-held 2014 Spring Fair
John had been the Clubrsquos exchange book superintendent from October 1995
to July 2012 He had turned earlier attempts at establishing a circuit book into a very successful and sustainable
operation John used to travel all over town dropping off the circuit book and picking up pages He was quite
assiduous in collecting money for sales from the book He also delivered Club Newsletters all over town saving us a
fortune in postage
Ron Mills on the left John Stoker on the right at the front desk in the foyer at Expo 2014 in April 2014
John amp Wendyrsquos home was often the venue for Club meetings to plan our Expo Bathes and Mountex inter-club
displays He gave great service to us in so many other ways He was always on the front desk at our shows putting in long hours
at most of them He will be missed
His diagnosis of terminal cancer was quite sudden ndash only 4-5 weeks before his
death
We also need to give a huge accolade to Wendy Stoker Wendy was an ex- president amp is a life member of our Club
Wendyrsquos memory hasnrsquot been quite so good for the last little while Also she had been finding the two-storied house a
bit difficult Soon after Johnrsquos funeral she travelled with Mark her son to Wauchope to start a new life there
Wendy with the assistance of her sons made a ldquofarewellrdquo visit to our last Monthly
Coin amp Stamp Fair

LETTERS FROM KEVIN ndash PART III
Kevin again hears from his pal Ebsworth E Tibbetsrdquo ndash
ldquo lsquoCoorabinrsquo
Vera St
Gilgandra
lsquoDear Kevin
I suppose you think it is time for me to write to you again
I intended to write to you earlier but I have had so much to do it is hard to find the time
I had to go up for my medical exam on Monday and got an A1 pass Judging by what the Captain
told me I should proceed to camp within a fortnight He is giving me a job in the signalling corp
and also operating by wireless
About the revolver Kev the trigger guard is slightly broken and if I can manage it I will bring it
along with me and leave it with the station master
We experienced a very heavy storm here last night The hailstones were three times the size of a
lolly ball without exaggeration and the lightning was very severe
There will be only three boys left in TD [tech drawing] when I am gone amp Mr Oxenford wants me
to bring back some canes when I come home on leave ndash but thinking of the boys I think I will leave
them
Well Kev you must excuse me for the time being as I have to go on duty But I will write a long
letter when I reach camp
Your true friend
Ebsworth E Tibbets
PS I hope your brother (Malayer) [sic] is well amp saferdquo
hellip- hellip- - [Morse code ending]
There is a note from Ebsworth postmarked at Goulburn on 21st December 1942 amp addressed to Kevin

Dear Kevin
I have no time to finish a letter but I am going home on Tuesday for 6 days leave I very much want to
see you If possible will you wait at the station Writing fully to you later

Dear Kevin
I donrsquot know what you think of me not writing to you as often as I did but the sudden call in to the
army and the job of settling down was the reason I did not write
- Page - 12 ORANGE COIN amp STAMP CLUB INC NEWSLETTER FOR OCTOBER 2014
There has been nothing worth writing about for the last week except that my training is completed and
it wonrsquot be long before I am with my brothers
I have been in this camp now for four months and I am beginning to grow tired of it They say that
before we can leave here we must have six months training If I have to stop here another two months I
will go absolutely mad
About a fortnight ago I was home for 6 good days leave The only thing that spoilt it was the though of
having to return to camp
I felt it difficult to settle down after returning but now Irsquom settled down amp feel as fit as a fiddle
I have become a member of the Australian Radio College amp I will receive all my books papers badges
etc on Wednesday The reason I am taking up this course is that I will something interesting to do while
Irsquom here If Irsquom ever in a Battle area the knowledge might prove useful
The weather has been frightful the whole time I have been here To-day it was dusty amp tomorrow I
suppose I will be as cold as a frog in a half-frozen pool You just canrsquot imagine how changeable the
weather is
We have not had any route marches lately but I suppose we will have one at any time now We were to
go on an all day route march last Friday
But it rained thus preventing us from going
We have been issued with some of our equipment so I think there must be something in store for us
I have been studying a bit on supplies this morning I very much hate the subject but if its not learnt
well I wonrsquot get out of here The person who lectures on this subject has a terrific voice amp he has
absolutely ruined my nerves It is no use putting in a complaint as they wonrsquot listen to you
Well Kev there is nothing much else I can write about so will say cheerio until a day or two
that I can write about
Your old fine mate

At about this time Kevin made an application to join the News South Wales Government Railways He
was still to young to be called up for National Service He was still living with his dad in Orange His
dad worked at the Orange Munitions factory There was no vacancy however in January 1943 -
- Page - 13 ORANGE COIN amp STAMP CLUB INC NEWSLETTER FOR OCTOBER 2014
- Page - 14 ORANGE COIN amp STAMP CLUB INC NEWSLETTER FOR OCTOBER 2014
Kevin had applied in late-1942 His first offer of a position came n October 1943
A copy of a sample Railway entrance exam was supplied to Kevin It is shown on the next page 90
minutes was allowed to complete it ndash and calculators had not yet been invented
The Railways medical examination was always very rigid ndash probably more so than for entrance in to the
Army Testing for colour blindness alone took over 3 minutes
- Page - 15 ORANGE COIN amp STAMP CLUB INC NEWSLETTER FOR OCTOBER 2014
Kevin obviously passed this test and a firm offer of employment came dated 29th November 1943
By that time the family had moved from rented premises in William St to ldquoduration-of-the=Warrdquo house
in Buna Avenue Although only built for the War these hoses all still exist
- Page - 16 ORANGE COIN amp STAMP CLUB INC NEWSLETTER FOR OCTOBER 2014
- Page - 17 ORANGE COIN amp STAMP CLUB INC NEWSLETTER FOR OCTOBER 2014
While working for the Railways Kevin also held a position in the RAAFrsquos Volunteer Air Observer
Corps The Orange Munitions Factory was always considered vulnerable to attack by Japanese aircraft
While Orange unlike Lithgow had no anti-aircraft batteries the Air Observer Corps could sound an air
raid warning alarm They also provided protection for RAAF aircraft at the Bloomfield Park landing
strip Kittyhawk aircraft based at Parkes would do practice landings there Sometimes these planes
made ldquopracticerdquo attacks on Spring Hill
The Air Observer Corps manned aircraft observation posts around the town In August 1944 he was
busy with night duties at the Orange Railway Station and was unable to fully assist the Air Observer
Corps He was asked to return his badge

Sign of the times
This rather knocked about copper dirhem has little immediate appeal to the average
collector but its obvious defects are interesting in their own right The coin was struck
by the shahs of Khwarizm a former kingdom which corresponds roughly of what is now the west of Afghanistan and territory downstream to the Aral Sea in central Asia
For centuries the dirhem had been struck in silver but at the time this dirhem was struck
by Ala al-Din Muhammad II (H 596-617 AD 1200-1220) silver was in short supply The result was that copper coinage had to be struck to enable the economy to
function Had there been an insistence upon silver coinage there would have been little
coinage in circulation to enable much economic activity Imagine shopping today if
there was little coinage and no notes let alone creditdebit cards Being struck in cheaper copper of course meant that coins could be struck on much larger flans
At the time this coin circulated it was common to store onersquos wealth in necklaces
certainly where women were concerned a practice which continues to this day in many parts of Asia and Africa It was like storing onersquos wealth on a chain instead of
a purse and an instant indicator of personal wealth Silver coins in particular
frequently turn up in the market with obvious mount marks
Khwarizm Shahs Ala al-Din Muhammad II AH 596-617 AD 1200-1220 AElig Dirhem (34mm 543 g 5h) Balkh mint g Photo courtesy of CNG Ltd
The coin illustrated was struck in the town of Balkh (now in modern Afghanistan) and
shows clear evidence of having been mounted almost certainly as part of some
Mediaeval womanrsquos monetary assets and broken when the mount was removed That so much trouble was taken over a copper coin instead of one in silver (or even gold) is an
indicator that in its day this coin probably represented the only form of readily available
currency The attempted or piercing at one orsquoclock suggests that it may have been part
of more than one womanrsquos treasury

LETTERS FROM KEVIN ndash PART III
Kevin again hears from his pal Ebsworth E Tibbetsrdquo ndash

Vera St
Gilgandra
lsquoDear Kevin

A copy of a sample Railway entrance exam was supplied to Kevin It is shown on the next page 90
minutes was allowed to complete it ndash and calculators had not yet been invented
The Railways medical examination was always very rigid ndash probably more so than for entrance in to the
Army Testing for colour blindness alone took over 3 minutes

Kevin obviously passed this test and a firm offer of employment came dated 29th November 1943
By that time the family had moved from rented premises in William St to ldquoduration-of-the=Warrdquo house
in Buna Avenue Although only built for the War these hoses all still exist

While working for the Railways Kevin also held a position in the RAAFrsquos Volunteer Air Observer

The coin illustrated was struck in the town of Balkh (now in modern Afghanistan) and
shows clear evidence of having been mounted almost certainly as part of some
Mediaeval womanrsquos monetary assets and broken when the mount was removed That so much trouble was taken over a copper coin instead of one in silver (or even gold) is an
indicator that in its day this coin probably represented the only form of readily available
currency The attempted or piercing at one orsquoclock suggests that it may have been part
of more than one womanrsquos treasury

Coin amp Stamp Fair

lsquoDear Kevin

The coin illustrated was struck in the town of Balkh (now in modern Afghanistan) and
shows clear evidence of having been mounted almost certainly as part of some
Mediaeval womanrsquos monetary assets and broken when the mount was removed That so much trouble was taken over a copper coin instead of one in silver (or even gold) is an
indicator that in its day this coin probably represented the only form of readily available
currency The attempted or piercing at one orsquoclock suggests that it may have been part
of more than one womanrsquos treasury

by Ala al-Din Muhammad II (H 596-617 AD 1200-1220) silver was in short supply The result was that copper coinage had to be struck to enable the economy to
function Had there been an insistence upon silver coinage there would have been little
coinage in circulation to enable much economic activity Imagine shopping today if
there was little coinage and no notes let alone creditdebit cards Being struck in cheaper copper of course meant that coins could be struck on much larger flans

The coin illustrated was struck in the town of Balkh (now in modern Afghanistan) and
shows clear evidence of having been mounted almost certainly as part of some
Mediaeval womanrsquos monetary assets and broken when the mount was removed That so much trouble was taken over a copper coin instead of one in silver (or even gold) is an
indicator that in its day this coin probably represented the only form of readily available
currency The attempted or piercing at one orsquoclock suggests that it may have been part
of more than one womanrsquos treasury

lsquoDear Kevin

The coin illustrated was struck in the town of Balkh (now in modern Afghanistan) and
shows clear evidence of having been mounted almost certainly as part of some
Mediaeval womanrsquos monetary assets and broken when the mount was removed That so much trouble was taken over a copper coin instead of one in silver (or even gold) is an
indicator that in its day this coin probably represented the only form of readily available

Gilgandra
lsquoDear Kevin

We have been issued with some of our equipment so I think there must be something in store for us
I have been studying a bit on supplies this morning I very much hate the subject but if its not learnt
well I wonrsquot get out of here The person who lectures on this subject has a terrific voice amp he has
absolutely ruined my nerves It is no use putting in a complaint as they wonrsquot listen to you
Well Kev there is nothing much else I can write about so will say cheerio until a day or two
that I can write about

coinage in circulation to enable much economic activity Imagine shopping today if
there was little coinage and no notes let alone creditdebit cards Being struck in cheaper copper of course meant that coins could be struck on much larger flans

The coin illustrated was struck in the town of Balkh (now in modern Afghanistan) and
shows clear evidence of having been mounted almost certainly as part of some
Mediaeval womanrsquos monetary assets and broken when the mount was removed That so much trouble was taken over a copper coin instead of one in silver (or even gold) is an
indicator that in its day this coin probably represented the only form of readily available
currency The attempted or piercing at one orsquoclock suggests that it may have been part
of more than one womanrsquos treasury

Kevin obviously passed this test and a firm offer of employment came dated 29th November 1943
By that time the family had moved from rented premises in William St to ldquoduration-of-the=Warrdquo house
in Buna Avenue Although only built for the War these hoses all still exist

While working for the Railways Kevin also held a position in the RAAFrsquos Volunteer Air Observer

This rather knocked about copper dirhem has little immediate appeal to the average
