In general, the things I've seen really work online as startups have all been single-topic. It may just be Apple, or it might be laptops.
I think they do that for good business reasons, but they also do this from good community-building reasons. I don't have to explain to the audience of ArtsWatch who the hell Hamlet was and why that's a great play.
