Who OwnsWhat We Learn?

ThePrivatization

OfKnowledge :

Over the past few decades a trend has emerged of knowledge, information and technique being removed from the public sphere to behind the walls of patent law, or kept unpublished and private. Much research undertaken now is paid for by private enterprise, and from the results decisions are made which affect the quality of life of our nation(s).

Since knowledge is doubling each year or so (depending on the field chosen), and much new knowledge is retained in private hands, what is the impact on us, in a public school, fulfilling the basic educational endeavour of western society? What do we lack, and how can we find out?

How do we prepare ourselves and our students for full participation in our knowledge-driven world?

Karen Thompson: Ownership and appropriation of symbols in art. Who’s image IS that?

Terry Wister: Plato and knowledge; it is all ours, and indivisible. You cannot ‘own’ knowing.

Peter Koutakos: Knowledge as the driver of social change, and the implications of control of knowing. (Private knowledge vs. public discourse)

Gavin Barrett: The appropriation of language for corporate benefit. Hindering public discussion through ownership of language
