January 2020
Middleton Elementary Families- Happy January! Happy New Year!! I hope that you all had a great winter break and were able to spend time with family, friends, and others close to you. One of my winter break highlights was traveling to Tampa to cheer on the Gophers to a victory at the Outback Bowl! THANK YOU for a great 2019 and I am looking forward to what 2020 will bring. As you know, in December we started our GOOD NEWS CALL OF THE DAY incentive. Students earn ‘Positive Office Referrals’ from teachers and staff for doing things that are above and beyond normal expectations. My favorite thing is being able to call one family a day to let them know how well their child is doing. Middleton is full of amazing students and I am delighted to recognize some of them. I look forward to making many more phone calls this month! Congratulations to the students below that were December’s Good News Calls of the Day:
Lucas L. – 3rd Grade Ezra H. – 3rd Grade Nicolas D. – 1st Grade
Audrey K. – 1st Grade Mina H. – Kindergarten Kinley M. - Kindergarten
Audrey B. – Kindergarten Isabell K. – 1st Grade Peyton H. – 5th Grade
Kyle C. – 3rd Grade Mikaela A. – 3rd Grade
Ava H. – 3rd Grade Maddie P. – 4th Grade
There are a couple of big events taking place at Middleton this month. First, on Friday, January 10, 2020 from 6:30pm – 8:30pm is our Middleton Science Fair! This is a wonderful event that showcases our students and their hard work on a question or topic they investigated. On Friday, January 31, 2020 is our annual Winter Carnival put on by our wonderful PTO. I am hopeful that you can make one or both of these fantastic events! As a reminder to all families, there is a new check-in process in place. At this point, many of you are already in the system which makes your check-in time a little faster. For those that have not had their license scanned, just know this will add a minute or two to your check-in time. Also, if an adult checks in to have lunch with a student and are not listed in Infinite Campus, a parent/guardian will get a phone call to make sure the lunch visit is OK. THANK YOU for your continued support and we love having your children as our students! Remember…..it’s a great day to be a Mustang! Here’s to a great month of January! Mr. Arthur Williams, Principal @PrincipalArthur @MiddletonElem

Prevention • Cover nose and mouth when sneezing or coughing. Use a tissue or your sleeve. Dispose of used tissues in the trash. • Wash hands after touching anything that could be contaminated with secretions from the nose or mouth. Your child may need help with handwashing. • Do not share anything that goes into the mouth, such as drinking cups, straws, and water bottles. • Clean and disinfect anything that comes in contact with secretions from the nose or mouth. Use a product that kills germs. • Annual influenza vaccination is recommended for everyone older than six months of age. Ask your health care provider about the flu vaccine.
From the Health Office
It is that time of year again that students are unfortunately experiencing influenza and influenza-like symptoms. It is important to follow health and school district guidelines to prevent spreading illness to others. Please refer to the information below and feel free to contact the health office with any questions.
Influenza(Flu) Keep your child home from childcare and school until 24 hours after fever is gone (without the use
of a fever reducing medicine) and your child is healthy enough for routine activities. Do not give aspirin or salicylate-containing medicines to anyone under 18 years of age.
Symptoms Your child may have chills, body
aches, fever, and headache. Your child may also have a
cough, runny or stuffy nose, and sore throat.
Illness may last up to 7 days. If your child has been infected, it may take 1 to 4 days (usually 2
days) for symptoms to start.
Contagious Period During the 24 hours before and up to 7
days after the illness begins.
Spread • By coughing or
sneezing. • By touching contaminated
hands, objects, or surfaces.
Message from District 833’s Transportation Department: Our top priority is the safety of our students. With the winter season upon us, it is important
to remind students and families that inclement weather may lead to transportation delays.
While we make every effort to run our buses on time, there may be unavoidable delays result-
ing in your student having to wait outside for the bus longer than expected. Please ensure
that your student is dressed appropriately for the weather. In the event that buses are running extremely late, we encourage families to discuss and plan
for these types of situations. Bus routes running more than 10
minutes late will be posted on our Transportation website:
http://www.sowashco.org/services/transportation.
Should you have any questions, our transportation staff can assist
you at: 651-425-5303 for general education busing 651-425-5324 special education busing.
Middleton Elementary is participating in the
Family Mealtime Challenge, developed by the
Health and Wellness Collaborative and made
possible through the generous support of Allina
Health. Extensive research shows that eating
family meals together on a regular basis has
positive impacts on the well-being of children and
adolescents. Regular family meals can boost
vocabulary, reduce the risk of substance use, improve mental health for all family members,
and strengthen family ties and parent-child communication. Watch this short video to see what children think about family meals! See what families in your area thought about the challenge! • For two weeks, Monday, January 13th-Friday, January 24th, work as a family to complete the
BINGO box Challenge. Your child will bring home a Conversation Starters jar and a colorful BINGO
poster that includes great information about family meals, ideas for picky eaters, and healthy recipes.
• Complete as many bingo boxes as you can while focusing on quality time and quality food at family
meals. Do your best and tally up the completed boxes at the end of the week.
Like the Family Mealtime Challenge Facebook page. Remember to tag #familymealtimechallenge in your posts to share recipes, tips and advice for your fellow school members. • Please watch for an email with a survey link at the completion of the challenge and complete it
by Friday, January 31st to be eligible for fantastic prizes!
Materials will be provided in English, Vietnamese, Mandarin Chinese, Hmong, and Spanish. If your
family would like materials in a language other than English, please email jdowns@sowashco.org
Materials will be coming home on Friday, January 10th for the start of the challenge on Monday, January
13th.
