Department of marine technology:

History in brief1910: NTH: Norwegian Institute of Technology 1913: First professor in Naval Architecture (1-4 students)1939: Ship towing tank completed (10-30 students) 1972: Faculty of Naval Architecture (50 students)

-Shipbuilding in Norway dramatically reduced-Oil activity in the North Sea growing rapidly

1978: Faculty of Marine Technology (60-70 students)-Marine Technology Centre established

- Ocean laboratory- Structural laboratory- Machinery laboratory- Marine Cybernetics laboratory (2002)

2009: (90-100 students)

Maritime --> Marine• 1912-1970 : Maritime (Ship) Technology• 1970- : Marine (Ship and Offshore) Technology

• Curriculum:– From rule based design to first principles

• Hydrodynamics• Structural engineering

– Full curriculum of Offshore Technology established 1976• Marine Cybernetics from 2001

– Future challenges• Green shipping• Ultra-deep waters (1000 m and beyond)• Arctic technology
