“The Life of a United States Marine”
The Life of a United States Marine
SSgt Jose Angel Ruiz-Perez was born on June 11, 1969, in Matamoros, Mexico, to Raphaela Perez and Homero Ruiz. When he was twenty-eight years old, Jose immigrated to Brownsville, Texas, where he reunited with his parents after ten years of waiting for his legal immigration documents. Deciding to follow his childhood dream of becoming a United States Marine, he enlisted in the Marine Corps in March 1998. Jose was sent to boot camp at MCRD San Diego for three months. After completing his School of Infantry training, he was ordered to complete his Military School of Amphibian Vehicle Driver training at Camp Pendleton, California. In September 1998, he was ordered to report to the 2
nd Assault Amphibian Battalion in Camp Lejuene, North Carolina, where he attended college
classes evenings and weekends. In early 1999, Jose was promoted to Lance Corporal, and late that year he was deployed with the 26
th Marine Expeditionary Unit to the Mediterranean Sea. He
participated in numerous training exercises with foreign troops, including training in Spain, Tunisia, Turkey, Greece, and Croatia, where he received numerous awards and was promoted to Corporal. In 2001 Jose volunteered to become a weapons instructor at the Stone Bay rifle range in Camp Lejuene, North Carolina, and in 2002 he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant. This same year and after the events of September 11, 2001, he decided to reenlist in his beloved Marine Corps. He attended Sergeant School at Camp Geiger Training Base in North Carolina and became a United States citizen in Charlotte, North Carolina, in April 2002. In June 2002, Jose volunteered to become a Spanish translator against drug cartels in Mexico, Central and South America, with the Defense Intelligence Agency in Washington, D.C. For his

I hope this message finds all of you in good health and good business. TLARGI started 2011 off with a bang, or shall I say a “poof,” as champion magician Johnny “Ace” Palmer dazzled us all night long for our February dinner meeting. We welcomed our spouses and guests with a show that confounded the likes of Keith Thomas, Andy Keil, and myself into stunned silence. We hope you all can join us again in April for what should be a stirring first-hand report of our continuing Middle East conflicts. Most of our businesses have some sort of connection to defense, be it direct or indirect, and I’m sure all of us have a personal desire to stay informed and say “Thank You.” I’ve set up a few internal goals with the Board that I will share over the course of these messages. One goal is to increase our membership by 5%, or approximately 15 people. I am happy to report that as of the February Board meeting, we are already on the positive slope of this goal, having surpassed 2010 membership numbers. We have new applications yet to be reviewed in April, and I hope to report completion of the goal shortly. I want to reiterate my thanks to Ron Sparks for his years of managing the Membership Committee, and his willingness to work through the transition to new Chair, Andreana Gonzalez, who is already doing stellar work on that front. You should soon be seeing a link to a survey to allow you to give us some input on which programs and events you find the most beneficial through TLARGI. One such program is the Basic Rubber Technology class taught by Tom Martin, Jr. I was honored to be invited and attend the graduation ceremony in March, and it was great to see so many companies and individuals taking advantage of the class. I understand that some companies have waiting lists to be included. Be on the lookout for information on signing up for next year. I look forward to seeing you all in April, and best wishes until then. Regards, Alan D. Gordon

extraordinary job, he was awarded the Joint Service Achievement Medal, and in 2003 he decided to move on and deploy with his unit to the Iraqi War. However, the Marine Corps had a different plan for Sgt. Ruiz-Perez. He was ordered to attend Recruiting School in MCRD San Diego in March 2003, and upon graduation he became an outstanding recruiter with the 8
th Marine Corps Recruiting
District in Houston, Texas. It was there that he was promoted to Staff Sergeant, and in 2006 he was ordered to report to the 3
rd Assault Amphibian Battalion in Camp Pendleton, California, for
combat deployment to Iraq. In March 2007, Jose was deployed to Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF), where he served as a Section Leader and Camp Commandant, conducting numerous combat patrols, apprehending suspected Al-Qaeda members, and patrolling hundreds of miles of hostile territories. He managed to assist, with limited resources, local communities to receive school and medical supplies, including bringing food rations to remote villages in the Al-Ambar province. Finally, in November 2007 his deployment came to an end and he returned to his parent command in Camp Pendleton, California. Following his deployment, in 2008 Jose reported to the 3
rd Assault Amphibian Battalion n Bravo Company, where he conducted numerous training
events in Twenty-Nine Palms and along California shorelines. This same year he attended the Staff Non-Commissioned Academy, and in 2009 he was ordered to report to Alpha Company. In 2010 Jose volunteered with the I Marine Expeditionary Forces to work with the Advisor Training Group to train fellow Marines facing future deployment overseas and to Afghanistan, where he continues to serve to this day. SSgt Jose Ruiz-Perez is currently separated from his family pending possible deployment or
new assignment in Texas where his family resides. Jose is married to the beautiful Zayrel (formerly Calderon). They have four lovely children, Mya Marat, 9 years old; Jose Angel, 4 years old; Victoria Bella, 2 years old; and 8-month-old Zayrel Elizabeth. Introducing SSgt Jose Ruiz-Perez will be Cynthia Martinez, author, speaker, singer, and the Founder/President of Words of Comfort, Hope & Promise, who sponsors SSgt Ruiz-Perez, his company and their families. This organization is dedicated to supporting our troops and their families. Among her many awards of appreciation, Cynthia received the “Bob Hope Award” in recognition of her dedication to supporting U.S. troops and their families.

Meet Your Board
Mike Haney - 2011 TLARGI Chairman Elect
Interview by: Graham Pence, TLARGI News Editor
This year‟s selection for TLARGI Chairman Elect is a very intelligent man with a
unique family history. Mike Haney is a “3rd generation rubber man.” Haney is the grand-
son of TLARGI Honorary Life Member, Bill Haney, former president of Kirkhill-TA.
As a new member of TLARGI in the late 90‟s, Haney immediately recognized the
rubber group as a great way to meet others in the local rubber industry.
“Throw in a few golf tournaments and I was hooked,” said Haney. Golf combined
with the opportunity to meet new people was a great way for Haney to learn what
TLARGI is all about.
In 2001, Haney volunteered for his first committee, Reception and Publicity. Work-
ing the reception table during meetings was a great way for Haney to get acquainted with
the members and learn a lot of stories about his grandfather‟s endeavors in the rubber in-
dustry.
“As someone read my name tag they would say, „I knew Bill Haney…‟ and the sto-
ries would continue from there,” Haney explained.
In 2008, Haney was chosen for his first elected position, 2-yr Director.
“Having never served on a board before, it was an interesting learning experience,”
said Haney. “It was fun to serve on the board with the people I‟d met 20 years ago while
working a summer job at Kirkhill.”
When asked what he looks forward to most about becoming Chairman, Haney was
excited to learn about TLARGI from another viewpoint.
“Going through the chairs provides an in-depth look at each position, Director,
Treasurer, etc. As Chairman, it will be neat to see it all come together.,” Haney explained.
As Chairman, Haney plans to listen to the membership when it comes to
“improving TLARGI with the times,” and encourage new members to take on leadership
positions.
“I‟m excited to see the new faces in TLARGI; I‟ve noticed a lot of new faces this
year and a significant amount of younger members,” Haney said.
As Chairman Elect, Haney‟s main responsibility will be for the Summer Confer-
ence , which will take place at the Golden Nugget in Las Vegas, NV and next year he‟ll
take on the task of being TLARGI Chairman.
“It will be an honor to be chairman of an organization that has been around for so
long, not to mention one with which I have direct family ties.”

THERBAN/HNBR Resistance to Sour Gas
& Explosive Decompression
THERBAN® hydrogenated nitrile rubber (HNBR) is a specialty elastomer that has excellent mechanical
and dynamic properties as well as resistance to heat, oil, tear and abrasion. Such properties are very important to
meet the demanding performance requirements in an oilfield environment. THERBAN® HNBR can be used in
a wide variety of oil field components including stators, packers, blow-out preventers and drill bit
seals. Relative to other elastomers, it can potentially extend the service life and the replacement cycles for these
components. This presentation will explore the effect of HNBR polymer properties as well as compounding
effects on the resistance to fluids, hydrogen sulfide/sour gas and explosive decompression.
Victor received his Ph.D. in 2002 in Physical Chemistry and
Polymer Science from McGill University in Montreal, Canada.
In 2003, he joined LANXESS Inc. (formerly BAYER
Polymers) in Sarnia, Canada, where he had positions in the
THERBAN (Hydrogenated Nitrile Rubber) R&D as a Senior
Research Chemist and as Supervisor of the Testing and
Quality Control Manufacturing lab for the nitrile rubber plant.
Currently, Victor is an account manager and technical
specialist at LANXESS Corporation in Pittsburgh PA. He has
several papers and patents related to improving the properties
and performance of specialty elastomers. He is a member of
the American Chemical Society-Polymer & Rubber Divisions
and the Society of Automotive Engineers/SAE.
