THE LIFE CYCLE OF FLOWERING PLANTS

Gloria Varela4th Grade

WHAT IS A FLOWERING PLANT?

HOW DO PLANTS GROW?

PARTS OF A FLOWER

What are the 3 main parts of flowers?

1. Petals

2. Stamens – Male reproductive part of a flower

3. Pistil – Female reproductive parts of a flower

Follow the link to build a flower online

PARTS OF A FLOWER

Peduncle – Stalk of a flower

Receptacle – Part of a flower stalk where the parts of the flower are attached

Sepal – Outer parts of the flower that enclose a developing bud

Petal – Parts of a flower that are often conspicuously colored

Stamen – Pollen producing part of a flower

Anther – Part of the stamen where pollen is produced

Pistil – Ovule producing part of the plant

Stigma – Part of the pistil where pollen germinates

Ovary – Enlarged basal portion of the pistil where ovules are produced

POLLINATION

The act of transferring pollen from the male anther of the stamen to the female stigma

Pollen lands on the female pistil and sperm cells move to the ovary, fertilizing the egg cells

The result is a seed with a tine plant inside

The ovary grows into a fruit to protect the seeds

Animals, wind and water can all help in the transfer of pollen

Animals or insects that transfer pollen from plant to plant are called “pollinators”

SEEDS

3 main parts

1. Seed Coat – protects embryo and guards endosperm

2. Endosperm – stored food

3. Embryo – new plant with structures called seed leaves or cotyledons

How are seeds carried away from plant?

4. Animal carried

5. Animal consumed

6. Water

7. Wind

GERMINATION

Seed Germination – the process by which a plant grows from a seed to a plant

What do seeds need to sprout?

1. Water

2. Oxygen

3. Proper temperature

4. Some require light
