- What we are studying and why? Today we are going to be studying
the life cycle of a plant. Plants are a vital part of our every day
lives. They provide nutrients, herbs, food and much more. It is
important we realize plants are constantly changing and that we are
able to identify those changes. Teachers

Review 1. Seed Dispersal
- Slide 6
- Seed Dispersal There are many kinds of seeds and each grow a
different kind of plant, but where do seeds come from? Menu
- Slide 7
- Seed Dispersal The seeds grow in the fruit of the plant. The
fruit of a plant grows during the spring and summer, like this
apple tree shows.
- Slide 8
- Seed Dispersal Plants become dormant during the fall and winter
months. There are a number of ways that the seeds can leave the
plant.dormant Menu
- Slide 9
- Dormant When a plant is dormant it is during the fall and
winter months. At this time the plant is not dead, just slowly
growing.
- Slide 10
- Seed Dispersal WindWind can blow the seeds and spread them
around. Menu
- Slide 11
- Seed Dispersal Seeds in a pod can also burstburst open and be
spread around in this way. Menu
- Slide 12
- Seed Dispersal Plants can also shake seeds off the plant.shake
Menu
- Slide 13
- Seed Dispersal WaterWater can carry the seeds to different
areas. Menu
- Slide 14
- Seed Dispersal Seeds can be carried away ifcarried they get
caught on something. Menu
- Slide 15
- Seed Dispersal AnimalsAnimals eat seeds and they can be
dispersed in that way. Menu
- Slide 16
- Seed Dispersal Sometimes seeds can just fall and roll away.fall
and roll Menu
- Slide 17
- Seed Dispersal There are many ways seeds can be dispersed, but
no matter which way they leave the plant they will eventually begin
growing in the ground. Menu End of section Click on menu
- Slide 18
- Seed Growth Now that we have learned how seeds are dispersed,
it is time we discover how seeds grow into plants! Menu
- Slide 19
- Seed Growth First seeds are planted in the ground. Menu
- Slide 20
- Seed Growth Roots begin to grow helping the seeds get
nutrients. A shoot (a small stem) starts to grow out of the seed
and up towards the ground. Menu
- Slide 21
- Seed Growth When the shoot reaches the surface of the soil, it
becomes a sprout. Menu
- Slide 22
- Seed Growth Water, air, sunlight and nutrients from the soil
help the sprout grow and turn into a seedling.seedling Menu
- Slide 23
- Seedling A seedling is a small plant with very few leaves.
- Slide 24
- Seed Growth The seedling is now a young plant and plant growth
is now noticeable. Menu
- Slide 25
- Seed Growth Do you know the order of seed growth? If you are
unsure, review this part of the lesson again. Menu End of section

- Slide 26
- Plant Parts It is important that we can identify the parts of
plants so we know how the plant grows and what the parts do.

- Slide 29
- Plant Growth As a young plant grows into an adult it grows more
leaves and becomes a healthier and larger plant. Menu
- Slide 30
- Plant Growth However, if plants do not receive proper care or
have to live in unfit conditions they will not grow as well. Plant
Growth Menu
- Slide 31
- Plant Growth Next, the plant will grow flowers or blooms which
will then eventually grow fruit. Menu
- Slide 32
- Plant Growth The fruit grows during the spring and summer
months, and when ripened can be harvested by humans or animals.
Menu
- Slide 33
- Plant Growth As we have already mentioned before, the fruit
contains the seeds and when the fruit has been produced the seeds
can begin to be dispersed. Menu
- Slide 34
- Plant Growth Menu Once the seeds are dispersed, the plant
begins to become dormant. This is the last stage in the life cycle.
When spring comes, dormancy will end and the life cycle will begin
again.

try going through parts of the lesson again or ask your teacher. If
you know the material, you can move on to the review. Keep up the
good work! Menu End of section Click on menu

- Teachers Target Audience Third grade Indiana rural students.
Class size around 25 students Ages ranging from 8-10 years old.
Children with special needs can receive help from a teaching
assistant.
- Slide 88
- Teachers Learning Environment: Students will be sitting at
individual computers with head phones on in a computer lab. The
teacher will be walking around helping any student who needs
help.
- Slide 89
- Teachers Objectives: For students to be able to identify and
explain the life cycle of a plant from the being stage as a seed
through dormancy by taking a 10 question quiz and getting 100%
accuracy. 3.5.5 Explain that one way to make sense of something is
to think of how it relates to something more familiar. 3.6.4 Take,
record and display counts and simple measurements of things over
time, such as plant or student growth. 3.6.5 Observe that and
describe how some changes are very slow and some are very fast and
that some of these changes may be hard to see and/or record
- Slide 90
- Quiz This picture does not show the full order of seed growth,
keep trying.
- Slide 91
- Quiz Good answer! It starts out as a seed, grows roots and a
shoot, reaches the earths surface and is a sprout. It then becomes
a seedling, and finally a young adult plant.
- Slide 92
- Quiz This picture is missing a few steps that were covered in
this lesson, try reviewing Seed Growth and try the quiz again.
- Slide 93
- Quiz Sorry try again. This picture does not show the correct
seed growth.
- Slide 94
- Quiz Sorry, you selected some of the plant parts but this list
is not complete.
- Slide 95
- Quiz Way to go! This picture shows all the plant parts.
- Slide 96
- Quiz Try again, there are more plant parts than this.
- Slide 97
- Review The fruit of plants contain seeds. Plants need plenty of
water and sun to grow, plus air and soil. In the spring, plants
begin to grow leaves. In the summer, they are fully mature. In the
fall, they change color. In the winter, they have lost all their
leaves. Menu
- Slide 98
- Review Flowers only appear on mature plants. Seed growth: seed,
seed with roots and shoot, sprout, then seedling. Seeds can be
dispersed by animals, people, wind, water, falling, rolling, and
shaking. Menu
