OSPREY JUNCTIONTRAILHEAD ACQUISITIONThis 10-acre site was acquired in 2008 with funds from Sarasota County’s Neighborhood Parkland Acquisition Program, which is a voter-approved and taxpayer-funded program dedicated to the purchase of land for preservation, public access, connectivity and enjoyment.
Visitors of Osprey Junction Trailhead can stroll the grounds, enjoy nature, picnic and access The Legacy Trail. Trail users can walk, run, bicycle and skate north to Culverhouse Nature Park and south to Venice and the Venetian Waterway Park.
TRAIL ETIQUETTE AND RULESThe rules are designed to ensure that everyone is able to enjoy all the features of the trail safely. A complete list of rules are posted along the trail. Trail users should remember the three “C’s” of trail use: Courtesy, Consideration and Control.
• Stay to the right. Let others pass on your left. Announce you are “passing on the left.”
• The speed limit on the trail is 15 mph.
• Always stop and use crossing signals at road intersections.
• Motorized vehicles are prohibited.
• Dog-friendly. All dogs must be kept on a hand-held, maximum 6-foot leash.
• Cyclists under 16 must wear a helmet.
• Bicycles yield to pedestrians.
• Pack in, pack out. Please do not litter.
?Did you know?
A portion of this property served as a tree nursery before Sarasota County Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources obtained it. Today, palms, oaks, pines and palmettos cover much of the remaining land.
AMERICAN ALLIGATORS The southeastern United States is the only place in the world where alligators exist naturally. They are an important part of Florida’s natural history and an integral component of aquatic ecosystems. Alligators may be present in all fresh bodies of water and reside in the ponds at Osprey Junction Trailhead.
Learn how to keep alligators and visitors safe by following these tips: • Do not approach or disturb alligators. Alligators can perceive movements as threatening, so stop until the alligator has moved back into the pond or turn around and walk in the opposite direction if you see one. • Always keep your pets leashed. • Do not feed alligators.
• Be aware of baby alligators. Female alligators are never far from their hatchlings.
WILDLIFE OBSERVATIONS While enjoying the park and The Legacy Trail, watch for native wildlife, such as gopher tortoise, snowy egret, tricolored heron, rattlesnake, banded water snake, bobcat and alligator. Remember to observe wildlife from a distance.
?Did you know?Osprey Junction Trailhead is dog-friendly; however, pets should remain on a maximum 6-foot leash at all times for their own safety and to protect the park’s sensitive habitats and resident wildlife.
