Dear friends!

What does God value?

In I Samuel 16, we read about how David was anointed by Samuel to be King of Israel. He wasn’t the obvious choice. David

was the youngest of eight sons of Jesse. The first seven brothers stood before Samuel. They were strong, handsome young men who appeared as though they any of them could be king. One after the other they were rejected to be king. The Lord says to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for the Lord does not see as mortals see; they look on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart” (I Samuel 16:7).

So David, though he was the youngest and probably small in stature compared to his brothers, was anointed by God King of Israel. God did not consider David’s outer appearance. God valued David’s hidden qualities far more. As we know, David loved and trusted the Lord with all his heart, mind and strength. And the spirit of God dwelled richly within him for all his days.

It’s funny how we as human beings make quick judgments and assumptions about someone based on their outward appear-ance. We see someone wearing torn up clothes and we automat-ically think the person is poor and homeless. We see a group of teenagers hanging out on the street corner and our first thought is, “There’s trouble!” We see someone who comes to church who appears to have it all together. And we assume it’s true. But what if we looked beneath the surface and really saw the person for who they really are? What if we saw one another as God sees us? What if we could share with one another our joys and struggles and what’s really on our hearts?

Worship

What does God value?

God in Christ looks past our outward appearance and to what’s truly in our hearts. God is not concerned with how many extracurricular activities you and your family are involved in. God IS concerned for the health of your spirit. God is not ultimately concerned with how efficient we run our church meetings or how many events we can jam into one weekend or if the children behave in worship. God is concerned for our faith and how we live it each day. God knows the aroma of our hearts no matter what the aroma may be.

What does God value? God values you. God loves you. Let’s see one another as God sees each of us.

In Christ,

Pastor Scott

Stewardship Awareness Campaign: Live Simply

“They are to do good, to be rich in good works, generous, and ready to share, thus storing up for themselves the treasure of a good foundation

for the future, so that they may take hold of the life that really is life.” – 1 Timothy 6:18-19

Dear Friends,

As followers of Jesus, the measure of our stewardship is not only what we give, but what we keep for ourselves. What are we willing to share?

We begin our stewardship awareness campaign a little earlier than we’ve done in the past. September 9, 2018 will be the be-ginning of a four-week stewardship emphasis for NBPC called Live Simply. We will learn how to become more generous givers and faithful stewards as we explore what it means to:

Live Simply as we follow Jesus (September 9)

Live Simply as we explore the truth about our consumer culture (September 16)

Live Simply with the support of our church family (September 23)

Live Simply and generously by living with and sharing enough (September 30)

Each week we will focus on one of these themes during worship in creative and inviting ways. We hope you will be present each week. And then, on September 30, 2018, we will join one anoth-er in presenting our commitments of giving in support of the ministry and mission to which we are called as New Braunfels Presbyterian Church at a special fellowship luncheon.

The Apostle Paul shares his simple secret of contentment in Philippians 4 when he says that he can do all things through Christ. During our Live Simply emphasis, may we learn to more fully follow and rely on Jesus while loving and serving in community, and experience more deeply the joy of a simple yet generous and abundant life and faith—life that really is life.

In Christian fellowship,

Dr. Frank Hampel

Stewardship Committee Chairperson

Rev. Scott D. Nowack

If you have an illness, a death or other tempo-rary issues, the CONGREGATIONAL CARE COMMITTEE and other volunteers are ready to provide food for you. We will reach out when we know there is potential need, but we may not be aware of every situa-tion, so please call the Church Office and Lynda, our Admin, will get the word to the Food Coordinator, Jeannine Biggers. Please let us help you in your time of need.

Be a Volunteer! If you have volunteered to provide food to members or if you would like to be added to the list, there are several things for you to know:

1. Prepare a home cooked meal: you may be asked to pair with another volunteer and provide part of the meal, e.g.: one person would do the entrée and they might do sal-ad and dessert. One or both would then deliver it to members, OR you may wish to do the entire meal, This would-be worked out between Food Coordinator and the vol-unteers

2. Go to a restaurant and pick up food: then deliver it to the member.

3. Give a gift card to a restaurant: You can either deliver the gift card to them member or give it the pastors or to Lynda to keep on hand for such situations,. Restaurants like Panera Bread, Buttermilk Café or Cravings might be good choices if there ae dietary restrictions or special preferences.

4. Another option: Pick up deliver meals from a local grocery store if the member can do the final preparation easily. E.g.: meat/vegetable, salad, dessert.

5. Always be aware of special dietary requirements: the Food Coordinator will heck with the member t determine any die-tary need.

Thank you for being willing to provide this appreciated service to fellow members. If you have any questions, please call Congregational Care Committee Chairman, Connie Worley at 830-385-4429 or Lynda at the Church, 830-625-5141.

Adopt-a-Highway Clean-Up on September 15

WHAT: Quarterly Adopt-a-Highway Cleanup WHEN: Saturday, September 15 @ 8 am WHERE: NBHS Parking Lot on Loop 337 WHY: Help keep our community shining bright! WHO: You and other NBPC volunteers. We need ALL the volunteers we can get as the trash along our route is “thick!” HOW: NBPC provides trash bags, safety vests,

and trash pickup sticks. You wear closed toe shoes, appropriate clothing, work gloves and bring water

Thank you to the seven amazing volunteers who spent time on June 2 early in the morning picking up highway litter on NBPC's stretch of Loop 337. Though our area is smaller due to construction, the volume of trash is still unbelievable. About 22 bags of trash were collected by volunteers James Lowe, John Sutton, Sharon, Earl Dittman, Scott Garrett, and Walter and Kari Hutchison. They shined!

SCOTLAND UPDATE---For those of you who may still be on the fence about going on the May 2019 Scottish Highlands and Islands trip, we only have 5 spots left! There are 39 travelers signed up, which means we will have the motor coach all to ourselves. Mary Jane and Kim have tweaked

the standard 14-day trip to include some special activities in addition to the regular sites. It is shaping up to be a very rewarding experience. And there are some surprise people going on this

trip. Most of those who have signed up know who these travelers are, but if you want to know for yourselves, please talk to Mary Jane Coleman or Kim Wright.

CAN YOU HOLD YOUR APPLAUSE FOR ANOTHER 10 YEARS????

Mary Jane and Kim are pleased to announce that they are planning another trip in 2020. We know, we haven’t even gone to Scotland yet! But 2020 is almost 2 years away. Lots of time to

plan for it. We are going to take a trip to Europe that will include the Passion Play in Oberammer-gau, Germany. The play is only performed every 10 years, but after 2020, the next one will be in 2034, the 400th anniversary of the little town being spared the plague. So in gratitude to God, the villagers promised that they would honor God by reenacting the agony and crucifixion of Christ.

This is a must-see and should be a wonderful experience, but tours are filling up fast---and I mean FAST! If you are interested, please contact Mary Jane Coleman or Kim Wright.

Don’t hesitate and miss out on this opportunity. You won’t get another chance until 2034.

Caring Tip from Stephen Ministries

I recently watched the movie “Still Alice”. This Academy Award winning film tells the story of Alice, a 50-something college professor who is diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s. In a short, poignant scene toward the middle of the film, Alice’s daughter Lydia asks about her experience with Alzheimer’s:

“What’s it like? What does it actually fee like to have Alzheimer’s?”

Alice tells her daughter:

“Well, it’s not always the same. I have good days and bad days, and on my good days I can, you know, almost pass for a normal person. But on my bad days, I feel like I can’t find my-self….I can see the words hanging in front of me and I can’t reach them and I don’t know who I am. And I don’t know what I’m going to lose next.”

After a moment, Lydia replies with just two words:

“Sounds horrible.”

The words “Sounds horrible” might not sound caring, but actually they convey tremendous empathy and compassion.

All too often, when someone shares painful feelings, we’re so anxious to help the person feel better that we downplay that pain. Lydia could have done that, saying something like:

“Try to focus on the good days, not the bad.”

“There could be a medical breakthrough at any time.”

“You need to stay positive!”

Instead, Lydia validates and shares in her mother’s feelings – which was just what Alice need-ed right then.

So, the next time someone shares about a painful situation, something like “Sounds horrible” might be just the right thing to say.

The Treasurer’s Report (Rosanne Stockhorst) reflected year-to-date income as of July 31 at 50% of that budgeted. Expenses for the same time period was 57% of that budgeted. Overall, we have a deficit balance of $41,482 for the year.

Christian Education Committee (Sharon Jebens): Sunday School classes resumed Aug. 5. The youth are studying Narnia. There will be no Sunday School on Sept. 16 (Mission Fair) and Sept. 30 (5th Sunday combined worship service). An all-ages family fun church campout on church grounds is being organized for Oct. 6 and 7.

Communications Committee (Kari Hutchison): The next Adopt-a-Highway trash pickup event is Saturday, Sept. 15, starting at 8 am in the NBHS parking lot. A redesign of the website is in the works. Stewardship materials are being prepared.

Congregational Care Committee (Connie Worley): A reception was organized and hosted by the committee after the memorial service for Mil Duhon on Aug. 10. Another one is planned for Aug. 31 after Dave Gallaher’s service. Visitations continue with homebound members and a Telephone Ministry is going to be added to follow up with members who have prayer requests for family and friends not members of NBPC.

Facilities Committee (Matt Grones): Considering options for upgrading phone system in light of the church deciding to pull fiber optics into the building to significantly improve Internet speed and bandwidth. It is possible the church could save about $275/month in phone line expense alone by upgrading to a digital system with voice and data running over fiber optic trunks.

KDO Committee (Colleen Beito): The KDO annual report was provided and included the note that the KDO program came in under budget in 2017-18 by $4,500. First day of school is Tuesday, Sept. 4.

Membership Committee (Linda Gabbard): Encouraging members to sign up to bring Sunday snacks for members and guests to enjoy in the Narthex. An updated membership directory without photos is under production and should be out in late September.

Mission & Outreach Committee (Rev. Katy Walters): See details in newsletter article. Mission Fair is Sept. 16 in the Activity Center. In addition, a Habitat for Humanity work day is likely to occur in November.

Stewardship Committee (Frank Hampel): Proposed committee budgets are due to the committee by Sept. 7. Stewardship Season will run throughout September and Stewardship Sunday will be Sept. 30 with a catered lunch after the combined service.

Worship Committee (Bob Nolen and Pastor Katy): The committee is discussing a plan to replace the outdated organ in the choir loft. Blessing of the Backpacks is Aug. 26. The 50th Anniversary of the Sanctuary will be celebrated on Oct. 13. There are two subcommittees with one discussing the role of the 9 am worship service and the other working on personnel.

Pastors’ Report: Pastor Scott reminded us of Stewardship Month in September. He also shared that Rev. Sallie Watson, general presbyter at Mission Presbytery in San Antonio, will be our guest pastor on Oct. 21. Pastor Katy thanked everyone for allowing her to serve at Montreat in NC this year.

New Business: Session received and accepted the resignations of Mason Standley as Trustee, and Steve Hankins from Session. In addition, elder Austin Talley will serve with Sharon Jebens on the nominating committee. A congregational meeting will be called for Sept. 2 at 10 am to approve the nominating committee that includes Diane Schulz, Pauline Reynolds, and Dave Wright. They will be responsible for finding and nominating five members as elders and two members as trustees.

Mission & Outreach News and Opportunities

The month of July was busy for the church’s Family Promise program. We had a mother with four children ranging in age from 12-years-old to 4-months-old, another mother with a 3-month-old boy, and a mother with a girl that turned two while staying with us. We were fortu-nate enough to celebrate the two-year-old’s birthday with balloons, candles, a cake and ice cream!

Each evening saw us enjoying great food prepared by some very special people. We broke bread with the families over food that included meat loafs, tacos, cake, and cookies.

Evening fellowship varied from night to night with eve-nings spent doing puzzles, playing basketball or a fast-paced game of air hockey. One evening had families dancing and singing to George Burke and his guitar while Gretchen Weicker organized the children into a percussion section (see photo).

We hope each of you can come by the Family Promise table during the Mission Fair in the Activity Center on Sept. 16. We will have the new program director, Manijeh Huereca, joining us and hope to have a graduate or two from the Family Promise program there to share their stories about their life journeys.

In addition, our next Family Promise host week is Oct. 7-14 and we would love to have you vol-unteer! Call John or Charlotte Sutton at 830.305.8439 or 817.995.3022.

All of the agencies listed in these briefs are supported in some way by NBPC.

Communities in Schools’ annual Dining with the Stars is on Tuesday, Sept. 25. To make reservations call 830.620.4247. Thank you to everyone for your donations to CIS’ annual Pack the Bus school supply drive too! Learn more about the organizations and agencies our church supports monetarily and/or with volunteers during our annual Mission Fair in the Activity Center on the morning of Sunday, Sept. 16. Children and others can decorate a couple of studs to be used in a future Habitat for Humanity home during the fair. Family Promise has some volunteer opportunities. It is looking for Day Center volunteers willing to cover the front desk on a periodic basis. In addition, it needs more volunteers to drive guests that do not have access to transportation. If you can help or have questions call 830.214.0024. The next Family Promise host week for our church is October 7-14. Volunteers are always needed to help prepare meals, play games with children, and/or serve as overnight hosts. Contact John or Charlotte Sutton at 830.305.8439 or 817.995.3022.

This Month’s Spotlight is on Bob and Judy Presley

Bob and Judy have been active members of New Braun-fels Presbyterian Church since they retired in New Braunfels seven years ago. Their service to the Presby-terian faith has long preceded that however.

When you ask them where they used to live, you find out that’s a long story. Judy was born in Illinois, and her Lutheran family moved to Irving, Texas when she was in high school. Bob grew up as Methodist in Irving. They met and started dating during their high school years.

After high school, Bob went to Jr. College in Pueblo, Colorado, and then to Hardin Simmons University where he played football and graduated with a degree in History. Judy graduated from Texas Woman’s Univer-sity in Denton, Texas, with her RN & BS.

Bob and Judy got married in 1964, during Bob’s last year at Hardin Simmons University. He then went to Graduate School at North Texas State University.

After he started his first teaching job in Irving, Judy finished her clinical nursing at Parkland Hospital in Dallas. She was there on the day JFK died at the hospital.

After Irving, and before New Braunfels, Bob and Judy lived in Big Spring, Tulia, and Kerrville. “And some of these places twice,” Judy says. Bob went from teaching & coaching to school admin-istration while Judy worked as a nurse at local hospitals, doctors’ offices, and later retired in school nursing. The Presley's have a daughter and son, both working in public school education, and also have 4 grandchildren, 2 attending New Braunfels schools and 2 attending Texas A&M. The family first lived in New Braunfels in the early 1970’s and were members of NBPC during that time as well.

Throughout their married lives, the Presley's have been active members of their various hometown churches. They are both ordained Elders and Deacons. In Tulia, they were Youth Sponsors and took the Youth Group on a ski trip.

Here in New Braunfels, Bob has served on the Session as Ruling Elder of the Mission and Outreach Committee; he was Program Coordinator for Family Promise for 3 years, and participates in Men of the Church activities. Both Presley's are regular volunteers at the SOS Food Bank. Judy is in Dorcas Circle and on the Worship committee and KDO Board. She also volunteers with Family Promise, Membership Committee, and delivers Meals on Wheels. Bob and Judy are always willing and eager to help when asked, and are two of the friendliest members of NBPC.
