It is my pleasure to personally invite you to celebrate Ducks
Unlimited’s 70th Anniversary at our Annual Convention in
Anchorage, Alaska, from May 23 – 27, 2007.
We have a wonderful agenda planned for the convention. In
addition to the educational and inspirational meetings, we have a
full menu of exciting parties, tours and side trips for this once-in-
a-lifetime trip to Alaska. The work of our staff,
in cooperation with the Alaska host committee,
ensures an unforgettable event.
Convention is a special time to recognize the
achievements of Ducks Unlimited, especially
those related to the Wetlands for Tomorrow
campaign; but no celebration of organizational
success would be complete without honoring the people behind
those achievements. Once again, the General Business Sessions
and Presidents’ Luncheon will provide a venue to pay tribute to
these special leaders.
The program schedule included in this brochure will help you
plan your time while at convention, but there are a few details
that should be completed now to ensure your trip’s success.
registration: Please take a few minutes to complete and return
the Convention Registration Form, along with your check or
credit card information. You can also register online with us
at www.ducks.org/nationalconvention. Remember, we have a
special registration fee for children ages 14 and younger.
Banquet reservations: Please complete the Banquet Form
and return it with your registration materials.
hotel accommodations: The Hotel Reser-
vation Form should be completed and mailed
or faxed to the hotel you choose. You may also
reserve your accommodations via the hotel Web
site listed on the form.
Tour reservations: Now is the time to make
your plans for the special side trips and tours available before,
during and after convention.
During the coming weeks, you will receive additional
information. In the meantime, I urge you to finalize your plans
and help us celebrate DU’s 70th birthday in Anchorage!
See you there!
Jim Hulbert, President
“ALYESKA”–in the language of the early Aleuts–means THE GREAT LAND. And
those who came later, lured north by a haunting inner spirit, have always been
hard-pressed to come up with a better way to describe Alaska, our 49th state.
And, believe it or not, Alaska boasts the
eastern, western and northern-most points in the U.S.
This Great Land spreads out to the horizon with more than
half a million square miles of breathtaking views and natural
wonders that defy description.
Throughout this vast wilderness is a
land of extremes, with terrain rang-
ing from mountains, glaciers, fjords
and volcanoes, to tundras, rivers and
forests. It is the premier destination
for adventure and tourists seeking
a personal connection with nature,
wilderness and the local people.
a Brief history: From Folly to Fortune When, on March
30, 1867, then Secretary of State William H. Seward negotiated
a deal for the United States to buy Alaska from Russia for $7.2
million–or 2 cents an acre, many Americans called the pur-
chase “Seward’s Folly,” or “Seward’s Icebox,” thinking Alaska a
snowy, icy wasteland. Of course, that was before
treasures of gold, oil and wilderness adventures
were discovered in the state.
Today, Alaska’s natural appeal draws millions
of tourists to enjoy its rich traditions and native
history, and thankfully, they are all well preserved.
From the earliest inhabitants who crossed over
the Bering Land Bridge from Asia approximately
20,000 years ago, the cultures and villages of Alas-
ka’s natives remain icons of the state’s rich heritage.
Visitors can experience the state’s unique native
culture through demonstration totem carvings,
native dancing, local artisan handiwork, Russian iconography,
or find traditional native tools and technologies from Tlingit
cedar bark hats to the Inupiaq ulu.
Whether you want to explore Alaska’s vast wilderness or
immerse yourself in its vibrant culture, a long list of things to do
and see awaits you in the Great Land.

The theme for Ducks Unlimited’s 2007 convention
is “The Journey Begins.” In this case, it really is
more than just a metaphor for a conservation
message. While the actual convention takes place
in Anchorage, the various tour packages that
Ducks Unlimited has put together will afford the
opportunity to explore well beyond the city itself.
Alaska is full of outdoor adventures, from the mild
to the wild. Choose from wildlife viewing, sea
kayaking, dog sledding and guided glacier hikes.
Relax aboard a cruise, pan for gold, or cast a line for
Alaska’s world famous King salmon. Skim the wilderness in a
“bush” plane or helicopter. Take a flightseeing trip over some of
the most breathtaking mountains in North America. In order
to enjoy all Alaska has to offer, you must get out and experience
it for yourself.
Whether you join us on our planned excursions or choose
to go out on your own, the choices seem endless. With that
thought in mind, we have provided this synopsis of Alaska’s
natural wonders, its people and culture.
To accurately portray Alaska is to use
superlatives: longest, greatest, highest.
Alaska holds the continent’s tallest mountain
peak, Mt. McKinley; it’s the largest state in the
United States, it’s two and a half times the size of
Texas; and claims the largest earthquake ever
recorded in North America, the Good Friday
earthquake of 1964.
When it comes to alaska, everything points north. From the
northern Lights, to the great northern migration of waterfowl.
Point your compass to america’s most northern state and joins us
for Ducks unlimited’s 70th anniversary national Convention.

After dinner, don’t miss the great nightlife found
in Anchorage. Catch traveling performers, music
festivals, comedy shows and live music at one of the
city’s many nightclubs, pubs and coffee houses.
Climate & Clothes With a moderate spring
climate of daytime temperatures in the mid-50s
to low-60s, and evening temperatures in the 40s, convention
attendees will enjoy adventure-packed days with almost 21 hours
of daylight!
While May temperatures in Anchorage are typically mild,
when traveling anywhere in Alaska, proper clothing is always a
priority. The layering technique is the most efficient and effec-
tive way to dress in Alaska, with varying weights to prepare for
any weather. Bring your most comfortable shoes, and dress for
the journey of a lifetime as you join Ducks Unlimited for our
2007 Convention in the Great Land of Alaska!
How do you begin a journey to one of the last unspoiled places left in
America? Well, the gateway to Alaska actually starts with Anchorage. To truly
experience the great outdoors isn’t difficult–where to begin is the challenge.
We’ve put together some suggestions of things to do, and places to see while
visiting Anchorage and nearby destinations. So take a walk on the wild side!
Embraced by six mountain ranges
and warmed by a maritime
climate, Anchorage is an urban
enclave surrounded by wilderness.
There is no city in the nation quite like it. In the
morning, you can catch world-class King salmon,
then catch a ballet in the afternoon or dine at a five-star restau-
rant. Anchorage is the only major city in the U.S. that, along
with its 277,000 human residents, is also inhabited by wolves,
bears, moose, Dall sheep and dozens of smaller animals.
The city itself rests at the base of the Chugach Mountains,
on a bluff overlooking historic Cook Inlet, named for Capt.
James Cook, the famous navigator who searched in vain for the
Northwest Passage. Sculpted by glaciers and seas, the Anchorage
area is a wonderland of majestic fjords and forested valleys,
where the northern lights ripple through winter, then summer
brings the city alive with vibrant, blooming flowers.
The municipality of Anchorage spans almost 2,000 square
miles—more than four times the physical size of Los Angeles—
and serves as the economic, communication, service and main
transportation center of Alaska.
Local activities Anchorage activities will thrill adventure
seekers of all interests and abilities. It is the perfect base camp
for Alaska adventures! Step foot on an Alaskan glacier, hike to a
mountain vista or stroll along Anchorage’s scenic trails. Cruise
in comfort through Prince William Sound or paddle along in
a sea kayak. Catch wild Alaska salmon or angle for trout in a
nearby lake.
This amazing trail system has a path for all abilities—from
accessible nature hikes to physically challenging mountain
climbs. Cyclists, joggers and walkers will discover endless
possibilities at their feet.
For those who prefer water to land, fishing, kayaking and
canoeing enthusiasts have unlimited opportunities to explore
Alaska’s many rivers, streams, lakes and protected coastal waters.
After a long day of Alaskan adventures, you’ll want to rest
and refuel with some of Anchorage’s scrumptious cuisine. And
rest assured, the dining options are as vast and varied as Alas-
ka itself. From the outdoor vendors lining Fourth Avenue, to
elegant eating establishments, Anchorage features food for
every taste. The most popular choice among visitors is wild
Alaskan seafood. There are more than 20 varieties of fish and
shellfish available in Alaska, produced fresh from the state’s
more than 3,000 rivers, 3 million lakes and 43,000 miles of
coastline. Seafood is a staple here, but it isn’t the only option, so
bring your appetite on this Alaskan adventure!
Surrounding Anchorage is an extensive network of
wildlife refuges and pristine parklands, providing ideal
habitat for Alaska’s diverse wildlife populations, such as bear, fox,
moose, porcupine, lynx, beluga whale, Dall sheep and a num-
ber of migratory bird species. Convention attendees can choose
from more than 200 miles of secluded trails to experience
Alaska’s great wilderness first hand.

Like any metropolitan city, there are many transportation
options within anchorage including taxis and limousines,
rental cars, RVs, bicycles, motorcycles, motorcoach charters
and public bus service.
Many attractions outside the downtown core cater to
visitors by offering free shuttles during the summer.
