BY SERGEANT LUYO

Close Order Drill

Tradition that builds esprit de corps, discipline and teamwork in a unit, and this is the reason why it must be practiced more often.

Esprit de corpsDefinition-The spirit shared by a group where a bond of solidarity is created.

Drill is a Marine Corps’ tradition where a sense of pride and esprit de corps is created

For example, the Marines of MALS 11 Ordnance look highly motivated, very animated and proud, right after they do drill

DisciplineDefinition-behavior learned at home, school, or church where someone told you to follow some rules.

A Marine must be taught discipline to learn how to follow orders. Drill puts discipline by instilling habits of precision and automatic

response to orders Bearing and appearance. For example, the Marines of MALS 11 HQ practice drill every week

their uniforms look squared away, and they are enthusiastic when giving the proper greeting of the day.

Teamwork Definition-Combined effort of a group of people to meet a common cause

When drill is conducted, it requires the effort of the platoon sergeants and its members.

It creates unit cohesion and increases communication. For example, the Marines of MALS 11 Avionics have an enhanced

ability to understand a goal, take initiative, and trust in each other to accomplish a task right away and on time

In conclusion…

Drill benefits the increase of esprit de corps, discipline and teamwork within a unit and its members.

NCOs will gain not only the respect of their junior Marines, but to their superiors as well.

NCOs must acknowledge the responsibility to pass this tradition and make it a priority in their unit as well.
