God is with us! Emmanuel! That is the mystery which we savor during this week of Christmas. The joy is at a fever pitch because we know God has met the ultimate gesture that He is with us by becoming one of us in Jesus Christ. In this feast of the Holy Family, we unpack what that means… that Christ had a mother, a father, a family, peers, a community. He worshipped at a synagogue. He had to be educated. He had to work. He had to be part of a society with laws, customs and expectations. Christ took on all aspects of being human except sin and, in doing so, He sanctified it. Christ spent 30 years of His life as an ordinary person. He was a son of Joseph and Mary. He worked in His father's business and lived in the town of Nazareth. Only three years of His life was spent in His ministry. Isn’t that something? Our Lord spent the majority of His time on earth as an ordinary, humble person, going about His business, caring for His family, and being part of the wider community. St. Athanasius of Alexandria, the great defender of the Orthodox Catholic faith in the fourth century, said in reference to Christ’s human nature, “what was not assumed was not redeemed.” He took on all this because He wanted to redeem all of it. His love reaches even into the mundane things of life. Christ lived as we live. He elevated every day life by His divinity and He shows us that what we do even in unimportant circumstances matter. Everything has value in God’s sight. As we begin 2020, let's bring this faith that God is with us into the uncertainty that a new year brings. That is why Jesus came, to give us hope. Hope is a theological virtue where we trust God to keep His promises. His salvation is real; our sins are forgiven; grace will make up for our weakness; fidelity will result in communion with God for all eternity. Let’s remember the words of Our Lady to St. Bernadette in the apparitions of Our Lady of Lourdes, “I do not promise you happiness in this world but in the next.” Whatever we are facing, God is with us and the promise of heaven is worth any amount of suffering we must endure to obtain it. May 2020 bring us closer to God and more ready for the fulfillment of His promises. May the joy of Christmas help us remember that our lasting joy is the hope of heaven.

RCIA: Adult Faith Formation DID YOU MISS ANY SACRAMENTS
ALONG THE WAY?…..
The R.C.I.A. Faith Formation Classes will
once again begin. If you, or a loved one who is
Baptized, and have missed a Sacrament along
the way or someone who feels a calling to the
Catholic Faith, consider the RCIA. This For-
mation Program provides education about our
Faith and works with the individuals towards
receiving their sacraments. The Sacraments
are given at the Easter Vigil Mass. You must be
18 years old and meet with a Priest or Deacon.
Feel free to leave a message and email address
at the Rectory for Deacon Richard or
Dr. Connie Salhany.
Shrine of St. Frances Xavier Cabrini
Some parishioners have asked to make a shrine of St. Frances Xavier Cabrini in the
church to honor this local saint who served Our Lord so lovingly and tirelessly by serving the poor
and immigrants. I have heartily welcomed this idea provided that this project be fully funded by
donation. While some have pledged already to the project, I wanted to invite others to be a part of it if
they wish. We will be getting a statue, a pedestal and candle stand for the shrine. Once the funds are
prepared and things are ordered, we will work on having a dedication of the shrine, probably after the
New Year. If you are interested in being part of this project, please feel free to bring donations to the rectory and specify it is for the Shrine of St. Frances Xavier Cabrini. Please make checks payable to Our Lady Help of Christians Church. St. Frances Xavier Cabrini, pray for us.
