SCENE SUMMARY

In this scene Tom and Jordan attend a party at Gatsby’s house.

The house in the book might have looked similar to those in the

earlier slides. During the party, those attending were probably

smoking, a popular practice by men and women in the 1920’s, as

well as drinking, which was illegal due to the 18th amendment to

the constitution. They were most likely listening to music, possibly

by popular jazz artists of the time like Louis Armstrong or Duke

Ellington. The party goers were probably wearing attire similar to

that shown in the photographs in earlier slides.

SCENE SUMMARY CONT

As they walk through Gatsby’s home they proceed to

the second floor, whereupon they enter the library.

Inside they meet Gatsby himself for the first time.
