Chittorgarh: The Grandest State of Royal Rajputana CapitaloftheerstwhilekingdomofMewar,ChittorgarhislocatedonthebanksofriverGambhiri in ChittorgarhdistrictofRajasthan.TheChittorgarhfort,fromwhichthecityderivesitsname,stands as a testimony to the Rajput pride and valour. Chittorgarhwas ruled from the eight century to the 16th century by the Kingdom of Mewar. Though the fort faced attacks thrice; the siege by Ala-ud-din Khilji is an important event in the history of the fort.Ratherthanfallingintothehandsoftheattackers,thewomencommitted jauhar (self-immolation) while the men waged battle. TheChittorgarhfortwasbuiltbytheMauryansinthe7thcenturyAD.Thefortisalsoknownas Waterfortandcomprises22waterbodies,palaces,towersandtemples.Thefortisspreadover 700acreandstandson180mhighhill.Itwasconsideredoneofthestrongestf ortsofIndia.The main attractions of the fort are the two commemoration towers, Kirti Stambh and Vijay Stambh. The formerwasbuilttohonourfirstJainTirthankarandthelatterwasbuilttocommemoratethevictory over Mohammed Khilji. Chittorgarhis also an ideal place for shopaholics.Visitors can buy metalworks, fabrics, handmade toys, leather shoes and jewellery. AnotherattractionofthecityisthebiggestRajputfestivalcalledJauharMela.Thefestivalisheld tohonourthesacrificeandbraveryofancestorsandallthreejauharswhichhappenedin Chittorgarh fort.
