• BEST = Building Environmental Standards
• Launched nationally in 2005
• Gave building managers, operators, and owners a holistic approach to integrating environmental considerations into building management

BOMA BEST® provides 5 levels of certification:
Certified All 14 practices must be achieved, up to 59% on assessment
Bronze All 14 practices + a score of 60-69% on full assessment
Silver All 14 practices + a score of 70-79% on full assessment
Gold All 14 practices + a score of over 80-89% on full assessment
Platinum All 14 practices + a score of over 90-100% on full assessment

Emphasizes the importance of best management practices with continuous improvement in 6 key areas:
– Energy
– Water
– Waste reduction and site enhancement
– Emissions and effluents
– Indoor environment
– Environmental management system
Background
• Since its launch in 2005, over 3,500 buildings representing nearly one billion square feet of Canadian commercial real estate have applied for certification/recertification.
• The growing trend toward building assessment and certification through BOMA BEST® speaks to the value this program has provided to the Canadian commercial real estate industry.

– is the Canadian industry standard for commercial building sustainability certification
– is a national program delivered through 11 BOMA associations across the country
– is based on the internationally recognized and accepted Green Globes™ environmental assessment platform

– is the only assessment and certification program of its kind for commercial buildings in Canada
– Is a unique voluntary national program designed to assess environmental performances and management of existing buildings
Effluents Performance and Management Practices of Certified Office Buildings (by Level and Building Age)
Eligibility Criteria
Building age
At the time of application, a building must be at least one year old
Occupancy
The building must have a minimum of 70% average occupancy for a minimum of twelve consecutive months
BOMA and Partnerships
• BOMA became a Partner In Injury Reduction in 2008
• In 2009, it collaborated in a best practice publication titled “A Guide for Building Owners and Managers” - a supplemental edition has since been added as an extra resource
• BOMA BEST® echoes COR (a provincial standard) for requirement of achieving certification on the management of hazardous products
BOMA and OHS
Occupational health and safety is clearly an issue of critical importance
for BOMA BEST® buildings.
Ministerial Support
• In 2012, BOMA received support from the Minister of Alberta Human Services for the creation of a new certificate to recognize companies that have achieved both BOMA BEST® Platinum certification and a Certificate of Recognition (COR)
• Currently 10 buildings in Alberta have achieved the Platinum certification, of which 3 have achieved a COR
