The English Establish 13 Colonies 1585 - 1732

Learning Objective: What were some of the common ideals that link the

Mayflower Compact, the establishment of the House of

Burgesses, and town meetings?

House of Burgesses

• Created in 1619 in Virginia

• First representative assembly in American colonies

• Became foundation for the principle of self-government in the colonies

Town Meetings

• Form of local self-government

• Landowners made laws and other decisions for the community

• Helped set the stage for the American Revolution

State of Nature Activity• Blue: Has the right to collect from ALL

• Red: Has the right to collect from Green and Purple

• Green: Has the right to collect from Yellow and Red

• Purple: Has the right to collect from Red and White

• Yellow: Has the right to collect from Red and Green

• White: No Rights to collect cards
