The Draw 2012

Gender Inclusive HousingApril 17th, 2012

Definition: ■ Gender inclusive housing supports students of

different genders who want the opportunity to share the same room or apartment for a variety of reasons

■ Gender inclusive housing also supports students who do not identify with a single gender, are transitioning between genders, or otherwise require privacy in their housing situation by offering restrooms which are not segregated by gender.

• Student support▬Transgender students▬Other LGBTQ students and allies▬Students with a desire to live where they feel safe/comfortable▬Students with non-romantic interest in an opposite gender

roommate▬Students with specific religious and other privacy needs▬Student groups in graduate housing who, for academic

reasons, prefer to live with opposite gender roommates▬Stanford student government (ASSU)

Note: A diverse cross-section of students, faculty, and other staff members were engaged in the committee formed in 2007 to explore options in this area

• Who lives in gender inclusive housing?▬ Upperclass and graduate students who opt-in and are assigned to gender

inclusive housing locations▬ Students who have friends of another gender who want to be roommates▬ Students who agree to the terms of living in gender inclusive housing

• Who doesn’t live in gender inclusive housing?▬ Freshmen▬ Romantic Couples▬ Any student who doesn’t opt-in (students are not randomly assigned)

• Where do they live? ▬ Specific buildings are designated in advance. Each meets the criteria of

providing single sleeping spaces and lockable bathroom/showers. ▬ Rooms with private sleeping spaces (apartments, suites with single

bedrooms, two-room doubles)

• What happens if a student moves out during the year?▬ Rooms revert to single gender if someone moves out▬ Students are allowed to bring in another roommates after they are assigned to

the same building and room type• What other items do we consider?

▬ Gender balance has to meet title IX regulations, so we only switch rooms to gender neutral after the gender balance is set in the house.

▬ This initially was a pilot program in four locations, but has expanded as students have requested more location options

▬ All locations where we have gender inclusive housing we have gender neutral bathrooms.
