5(x + 7)

= 5 • x + 5 • 7

= 5x + 35

Example #2

3(m - 4)=3 • m - 3 • 4=3m - 12

Example #3

-2(y + 3)= -2 • y + (-2) • 3= -2y + (-6)= -2y - 6

Be very careful with the signs!

Example #4 and #5

-7(2x – 5)= -7 • 2x - 7 • (-5)= -14x + 35

x(3x – 8)= x • 3x + x • (-8)= 3x2 - 8x

Be very careful with the signs!
