Implicit:

Implicit: Meaning is not clearly stated; the reader or listener has to infer (make an educated guess) what the author or speaker means

Explicit: Meaning is clearly stated, with no doubt about content or the purpose of the author or speaker; no inference (guessing) needed

In other words …Explicit: You can tell EXACTLY what the writer’s message is, because the writer comes right out and says it.

Example: That shirt is ugly, and you shouldn’t even think about buying it.

Implicit: You have to figure out what the writer’s message is, because the writer merely hints at the message.

Example: Hmmm. I’ve never seen that kind of shirt before. How about if we look at some other shirts before making a decision?
