The Dedication of the Lateran Basilica November 9, 2014
Gospel: Since the Passover of the Jews was near, Jesus went up to Jerusalem. He
found in the temple area those who sold oxen, sheep, and doves, as well as the
money-changers seated there. He made a whip out of cords and drove them all
out of the temple area, with the sheep and oxen, and spilled the coins of the
money-changers and overturned their tables, and to those who sold doves he
said, “Take these out of here, and stop making my Father’s house a
marketplace.” His disciples recalled the words of Scripture, Zeal for your house
will consume me. At this the Jews answered and said to him, “What sign can you
show us for doing this?” Jesus answered and said to them, “Destroy this temple
and in three days I will raise it up.” The Jews said, “This temple has been under
construction for forty-six years, and you will raise it up in three days?” But he
was speaking about the temple of his Body. Therefore, when he was raised from
the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this, and they came to
believe the Scripture and the word Jesus had spoken.
~ REFLECTION ~
Up until Jesus’ time, worship of God was
associated with a place, the temple in Jerusalem.
In today’s Gospel, Jesus identifies himself as the
temple, thus shifting the focus of our worship
from a place to a person. It is well to remember
this in a time of shifting demographics and
reconfiguring parishes. As precious as our church
buildings are to us, the Church is more than
bricks and mortar. The Basilica of Saint John Lateran is the “Mother
Church” of all the churches of the world and the
cathedral of the Diocese of Rome. We commem-
orate its dedication as a way of honoring all the
consecrated churches of the world, including our
own. But we must heed the words of Saint Paul,
“You are God’s building,” and today remember
that by our baptism each of us is consecrated to
God’s service.
~ REFLEXION ~

CHURCH BATHROOM RENOVATION PROJECT
Our physical space here, at St. Brigid, is in need of either renovation or replacement. We have not
consistently addressed these issues in the past. Parish Life is important to each and every parishioner, visitor
and guest. We want our “church home” to be inviting, welcoming, comfortable and attractive. St. Brigid
Church is “ours”, it belongs to each of us, not just the clergy staff. We must take pride in ownership and
work together to be successful in the planning and execution of all projects. Please review the plans for the
bathroom renovation and prayerfully consider what YOU can contribute to the effort.
